PART 1: JUSTIFYING THE SOLUTION
A RICH HISTORIC FEDERAL STYLE ARCHITECTURE AND TRADITIONAL FEELING BEST DESCRIBES THE
OVERALL MOOD OF THE SPACE. A SYMMETRICAL BALANCED, DESIGNED OPEN FLOOR PLAN MAKES THE
MOST OF THE SPACE AND EMPHASIZES THE MAIN ARCHITECTURAL FOCAL POINT, THE MAIN ENTRY WITH
THE MAIN DOOR CENTERED AND WINDOWS SYMMETRICALLY ON EACH SIDE ALONG WITH HIGH
CEILINGS AND ARCHITECTURAL BULKHEADS. SOFTENING THE VERTICALITY OF THE MAIN LOBBY SPACE
AND PROVIDE A COMFORTABLE OVERALL FEEL TO THE SPACE, HORIZONTAL LINES PREDOMINATE THE
DESIGN OF THE KITCHENETTE AND SUPPORT THE OPEN FLOOR PAN AS WELL. WARM SHADES OF BLUES,
REDS, YELLOWS, GREENS, BROWNS, GREYS, AND ORANGE ARE USED THROUGHOUT THE HOUSE.
TEXTURED WALLS, GLASS AND WOOD DOORS WITH BRUSHED CHROME HARDWARE IS USED
THROUGHOUT THE SPACE TO GIVE THE SPACE A HISTORIC TRADITIONAL FEELING. THE CHANDELIER
LIGHTING, CEILING LIGHTING AND WALL SCONCES USED THROUGHOUT THE SPACE GIVE A TRADITIONAL
FEEL AND BRING THE SPACE TOGETHER AESTHETICALLY. AS UNIVERSAL DESIGN IS ADDRESSED
THROUGHOUT THE FLOOR PLAN WITH AN ADA ONE-BEDROOM APARTMENT AND AN ADA TWO-
BEDROOM APARTMENT PROVIDING DIFFERENT HEIGHT TABLES, KITCHEN COUNTERS, LAVATORIES, WATER
CLOSETS,5’-0” CORRIDORS, DOUBLE DOOR FOR SECOND MEANS OF EGRESS ADDED AT THE BACK OF
THE BUILDING AND MEETING THE CLIENT’S NEEDS AS WELL AS THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN. CLEAN LINE
TRADITIONAL FURNITURE UPHOLSTERED IN A VARIETY OF WARM SOLID AND PATTERNED TEXTURED
FABRICS PROVIDE COMFORT AND VISUAL INTEREST WHILE MAINTAINING AND ENCOURAGING
COLLABORATION AND PRODUCTIVITY. THE DESIGN IS INSPIRED BY THE TRADITIONAL HISTORIC SETTING
OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS AND THE WILLINGNESS TO CREATE A TRANSITIONAL HOUSING FACILITY.
THE OPEN FLOOR PLAN, WARM COLORS AND TEXTURED FABRICS ALONG WITH THE REPETITION OF
HORIZONTAL LINES THROUGHOUT THE SPACE ALL WORK TOGETHER TO CREATE A RICH HISTORIC
FEDERAL STYLE AND TRADITIONAL FEELING THAT BOSTON COMMUNITY IS LOOKING FOR IN THEIR
TRANSITIONAL HOUSING.
PART 2: REFLECTING
REFLECT ON WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED IN THIS CLASS. IN AT LEAST 2–3 PARAGRAPHS, DISCUSS AT LEAST THREE
CONCEPTS OR TOPICS THAT YOU FEEL WILL BE MOST HELPFUL TO YOU AS YOU CONTINUE YOUR STUDIES IN INTERIOR
DESIGN.

I THOUGHT THE HISTORIC STYLE DATABASE EXERCISE WAS INTERESTING AND WOULD BE HELPFUL AS I PURSUE MY
CAREER IN INTERIOR DESIGN. I WORK IN AN AREA THAT’S LABELED HISTORICAL DISTRICT WITH LOTS OF OLD HISTORIC
BUILDINGS SOME USED FOR HOMES AND SOME USED FOR BUSINESS AND ON OCCASION WE DO WORK FOR A
FOUNDATION IN THE AREA CALLED THE HOYT INSTITUTE OF FINE ARTS. THE COST-ESTIMATING WAS CERTAINLY AN EYE
OPENER. I HAVE WORKED ON GETTING QUOTES FOR FURNITURE PROJECTS AND FOLLOWED IT THROUGH, BUT I HAVE
NEVER PRICED OUT AN ENTIRE PROJECT LIKE THE COST-ESTIMATING EXERCISE WITH LIGHTING FIXTURES, PAINTS,
CARPET ETC. THE HAND SKETCHING AND RENDERING EXERCISE OF PERSPECTIVES IS ALWAYS A CHALLENGE FOR ME,
BUT ONCE I GET STARTED I AM FINE WITH IT. I DON’T DO THEM OFTEN ENOUGH EXCEPT IN CLASS. I THINK THE HAND
SKETCHING OF RENDERING IS A GOOD TOOL TO LEARN AS AN INTERIOR DESIGNER. AT WORK WE USE COMPUTER
GENERATED RENDERING SOFTWARE FOR OUR PERSPECTIVES.

ALSO, DISCUSS THE POSITIVE ASPECTS YOU EXPERIENCED WORKING IN A TEAM ATMOSPHERE EARLY IN THE DESIGN
PROCESS AND HOW YOU CAN RELATE THIS EXPERIENCE TO YOUR FUTURE CAREERS.

I THOUGHT THE WORKING WITH A TEAM EXERCISE WAS BENEFICIAL. THERE WAS A LOT OF INFORMATION TO GATHER
FOR THE HISTORIC REFERENCE CHART SO DIVIDING UP THE TASKS MADE IT EASIER FOR EACH TEAM MEMBER TO
FOCUS ON EACH TASK. THE PROCESS WAS AN EYE OPENER AND LEARNING CURVE TO THE REAL DESIGN WORLD
THAT EVERYONE ON THE TEAM NEEDS TO BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR PART TO COMPLETE THE ENTIRE TASK.

The Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County Deborah Hennon, Executive Director

New Castle, PA 16101

The Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County

The women’s shelter began in 1979 by a group of dedicated volunteers

who sought the need for and establish a refuge for abused women and

children. In 1981 the women’s shelter was opened and rented in

Lawrence County, but the women’s shelter eventually out grew the
Image 1
original facility in 1982. The women’s shelter of Lawrence County was

then moved with the help of the Hoyt Foundation which provided a larger

home which was purchased mortgage-free and enabled the shelter to

enhance their services to the women in the area. A second house was

purchsed in 1988 with state funding in order to provide sexual assault Image 2

services to community members that where not residing at the shelter facility.

A half-way house called the Highland House was open in 1992 which was a

place where women recovering from chemical dependency would reside for a

3-6 monthe period and focus on recovering issues such as life skills and ways
Image 3
to rejoin the community as healthy, productive members.
2

A fourth house named The Mary Mullen House was purchsed in 1992 also to house the

adminstration staff. Named after Mrs. Mullen who left a donation to the

agency. As a non-profit organization it previously depended on the

residents of the community, but now funding is through the Lawrence

County Drug and Alchohol Commision.

Image 4
Construction of a new shelter facility began in 2001 and in 2003 was named the Crisis Shelter of

Lawrence County. The shelter is not just for women is serves men, children, victims of juvenille

offenders and victims of other serious crimes.

Image 5

“Breaking the cycle of violence” is what the Crisis shelter is all about. The Crisis Shelter

of Lawrence County has been the community’s response to violence and abuse since 1981.

Recognized for their innovative program excellence statewide, the shelter serves older victims of

any crimes, victims of sexual assault and other serious crimes, victims of domestic violence and

human trafficking victims. The shelter offers prevention education, intervention training and

public awareness on preventing violence and abuse along with therapy services for trauma

victims. The crisis shelter is the only domestic violence emergency shelter and sexual assault

agency in Lawrence County addressing many clients under one roof. Other ways the shelter

helps; there is a 24-hour hotline, shelter houses 36 individuals, four transitional housing

apartments with residency for up to two years, protection from abuse screening, individual and

group counseling, 24-hour legal and medical advocacy, food pantry and personal products for
3

shelter residents. The services are free to all victims of Lawrence County and surrounding areas

regardless of disability, age, race, sexual orientation, gender or income level.

The Crisis shelter offers a speaker bureau where a speaker will address a group and tailor

the topic or topics to the individual group. The following are just some of the topics, other topics

can be found on their website: Parenting skills, rape on campus, child sexual assault, active

listening, emotional abuse, workplace violence, stress management, etc.

The Crisis shelter has continued to grow and meet the community’s needs serving the

county as a recognized asset. Making the shelter and its programs more familiar to the Lawrence

County population. Ending the generation cycle of violence is the agency’s transitional housing

program which was rated first in its region for HUD project, the transitional housing program is

where the families are taught the skills of independence.

of renovations. While
Washington was away

it was updated under the

Lund Washington. In 1785
striking verdigris-green
paint was added.
Washington believed the
color to be “grateful to

an overcoat of glaze
further intensified the
color.

In 1775 Washington
decided to install an
elaborately decorated
plaster ceiling and add
plaster ornaments above
the fireplace. He hired an

the hand-tooled ceiling. A

Lighting
Highly ornate chandleries were a common lighting fixture within many federal style inferiors.
These fixtures were used as a focal pieces and seen in Living arears , entryways and dinning
rooms. Tables lamps with fabric lamp shade were also a common lighting fixture, with several
placed in different areas, rooms and hallways. These along with floor lamps were used as task
lighting in federal style interiors.

Doors
A common feature for federal style doors are the semielliptical fanlight windows placed above
the door. At time in place of the fanlight , Narrow symmetrical sidelities were placed
proportionally and surrounded by casing. For the door panel a raised panel with quarter bead
stick was commonly used.

ADJACENCY MATRIX
CONCEPT STATEMENT
Design Concept Statement for Transitional Housing in Boston, Massachusetts

A rich historic Federal style architecture and traditional feeling would best describe the overall
mood of the space. An open floor plan will be designed to make the most of the space and to
emphasize the main architectural focal point, the main entry with high ceiling and architectural
bulkheads. To soften the verticality of the main lobby space and provide a comfortable overall
feel to the space, horizontal lines will predominate with the design of the kitchenette and support
the open floor pan as well. Warm shades of blues, reds, yellows, greens, browns, greys, and
orange are used throughout the house. Textured walls, glass and wood doors with brushed
chrome hardware will be used throughout the space to give the space a historic traditional
feeling. Clean line traditional furniture upholstered in a variety of warm solid and patterned
textured fabrics will provide comfort and visual interest while maintaining and encouraging
collaboration and productivity. The design is inspired by the traditional historic setting of Boston,
Massachusetts and the willingness to create a transitional housing facility. The open floor plan,
warm colors and textured fabrics along with the repetition of horizontal lines throughout the
space will all work together to create a rich historic Federal style and traditional feeling that
Boston Community is looking for in their Transitional housing.
