Semi–Detailed Lesson Plan in Science VI

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
A. Identify the three important functions of the digestive system
B. Identify the organs of the digestive system and its functions
C. To demonstrate how the digestive system works and how the size of the food affects the rate of digestion
D. Show the importance of taking care of our digestive system

II. A. Subject Matter

Topic: The Digestive System
Reference/s: Breaking through Science 6; pp. 86-94
Materials: Chalkboard, Cartolina, Pentel pen, Illustrations

B. Preliminary Activities
1. Greeting
2. Prayer
3. Checking of attendance
4. Review of the past lesson
5. Ice breaker/ Motivation- Food Roulette (Game of Food)
Mechanics:
 The class will be divided into five (5) groups.
 The teacher will say a food word and group 1 will say another food from the last letter of the food
given by the teacher, then group 2 will say another food from the last letter of the food given by
group 1; group 3 from group 2; group 4 from group 3;group 5 from group 4. (End)
 It will be three (3) sets.
Rules:
1. Each group will be given 5 seconds to answer.
2. Brand name is not allowed but proper noun is allowed.
3. Beverage is allowed.
4. After the group 5, the teacher will begin another set.
5. The team/s who get/s the highest score will be the winner.

III. Lesson Proper

A. Activity
The students will be staying with their groups.
Each group should choose a representative and proceed in front.
The representative will choose one envelop and all of the members are going to arrange the given puzzle and
identify the picture and its function.
They will be given 10 minutes to finish their work.
The teacher will ask some questions.
1. What have you noticed with the picture?
2. What do you think is our lesson for today?
B. Discussion
The teacher will introduce the lesson about digestive system.
1. So what is the function of the digestive system?
Digestive system is responsible for breaking down food into simpler form that the body can use. Its
three important functions are the following:
 It breaks down the food into molecules that the body can use.
 It allows the molecules to be absorbed into the blood and be carried throughout the body.
 It allows wastes to be eliminated from the body.
2. What are the different organs present in the digestive system? Explain each function.
The representative of each group will be placing the organ that they got to its proper place in the
human body and he/she will be describing the organ and identify its function.
Parts of the Digestive System
1. Mouth- it offers an entry of food into the body. It is also where the mechanical breakdown begins.
2. Esophagus- transacts food from the mouth to the stomach by a movement.
3. Stomach- it is a hollow organ, or "container," that holds food while it is being mixed with
enzymes that continue the process of breaking down food into a usable form.
4. Liver- but its main function within the digestive system is to process the nutrients absorbed from
the small intestine.
5. Gallbladder- The gallbladder stores and concentrates bile, and then releases it into the duodenum
to help absorb and digest fats.
6. Pancreas- The pancreas secretes digestive enzymes into the duodenum, the first segment of the
small intestine. These enzymes break down protein, fats, and carbohydrates.
7. Small intestine- Made up of three segments - the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum - the small
intestine is a 22-feet long muscular tube that breaks down food using enzymes released by the
pancreas and bile from the liver.
8. Large intestine- The large intestine is a highly specialized organ that is responsible for processing
waste so that emptying the bowels is easy and convenient.
9. Rectum- It is the rectum's job to receive stool from the colon, to let the person know that there is
stool to be evacuated, and to hold the stool until evacuation happens.
10. Anus- The anus is surrounded by sphincter muscles that are important in allowing control of
stool.
C. Generalization
1. What are the functions of the digestive system?
2. What are the parts of the digestive system and its function?
D. Application
Problem: Does the size of the food affect how fast it can be digested?
Procedure:
1. Distribution of materials for each group.
Materials:
2 plastic or glass jars with lids, water and 2 pieces of candy
2. Fill the jars with equal amount of water at the same temperature.
3. Place a whole candy into one jar. Place a crushed candy into the other jar.
4. Put the lids on the jars. Carefully shake the two jars in each hand for about 1 minute.
5. After shaking, place the two jars on a flat surface. Compare the candies in the jars.
Guide Questions:
1. What have you noticed to the two pieces of candy?
2. Which candy takes longer to digest?
3. Why do you think that the whole candy is harder to digest than the crushed one?
4. What are the ways of taking care of our digestive system?

IV. Evaluation:
Direction: Label the parts of the digestive system.
1.

2.

V. Assignment
Direction: Fill in the blank the right word in the box. Write your answer on your notebook.
Digestion starts in the 1.__________. The food is change into soluble form. The 2. __________ softens
the food. The partially digested 3. __________ enters the esophagus. It goes to the stomach. The food is
further changed into liquid form in the 4. __________ so that the blood can carry it to the different parts of
the body. Undigested parts of the body are push into the small intestine where they remain until the feces are
expelled by a 5. __________.
