Question: Argue for and against that modern media can and will ultimately replace a

classroom teacher. Basing on your argumentation states the position of teacher in teaching
and learning process.

The question demands to explain on how a teacher can facilitate teaching and learning process
through the use modern media but at the same time it demand to explain on how modern media
can stand alone in facilitating teaching and learning process.

According to Mohanty (2009) defined media as, aids to communication and particularly useful
to young children for making the teaching, learning process interesting and meaningful. The
media are classifying into audio, visual and audio – visual media.

Schramn (1969), refers media as anything that carries information from the source to the
receiver. The information might be in form of verbal or non verbal communication, the media
can be television, radio, and newspapers, computer, chalkboards.

Business Dictionary (2018), defined the term media as, the communication channels through
which news, entertainment, education, data, or promotional messages are disseminated. Media
includes every broadcasting and narrowcasting medium such as newspapers, magazines, TV,
radio, billboards, direct, mail, telephone, fax, and internet. Media is the plural or singular verb,
depending on the sense intended.

Modern Media is an advanced means of communication which reflect the contemporary society.
This is a modern form of media which emerged in the 20th century, based on digital services.
This includes the use of internet and its related instruments like computer, e-mail, voicemail,
electronic meetings (video conferencing) digital newsrooms, television, smart board, smart
phone, interactive tablets, blogs, and Web Pages. Also, this includes the use of different
programs in a computer such as plagiarism checker, face book, twitter, Skype, e-learning and
YouTube.
A teacher is the only person who is capable of imparting knowledge and shaping the youths to
the wider scope of knowledge. Teachers are capable of living and moulding the youths such that
their power is paramount as they determine the fate of the society. Both teachers and parent live
with their children for a long time and hence they are capable of imparting knowledge, skills an
values that cannot be easily challenged by the society (Nyerere, 1966 as quoted by Haki Elimu
2008).
Mbise (2008) as quoted by Haki Elimu defined a teacher, as a person who has knowledge, skills
and special trainings in teaching, explaining and educating. The teacher is [person who is capable
of creating behavioral change in terms of cognitive, psychomotor as well as affective domain.

Teachers need to be able to adapt curricula so that technology use supports learning goals and
technology is used as tool and not as substitute for instruction (Reynard, 2003 as quoted by
Prasad, 2009:47).

Therefore; it is true that modern media and teachers acts as a single coin that means cannot be
separated in teaching and learning process due to the fact that teachers has a great role and uses
different modern media in achieving education goals in different ways as follows

Teacher is a Facilitator

A teacher is a facilitator, because he/she is facilitating learning process to the students by using
different modern media like, projectors, e learning systems, computers, so through that modern
media itself cannot facilitate learning and teaching process, because all those needs to be
operated by a facilitator who is a teacher, so due to that a teacher use those modern medias to
facilitate learning and teaching process so that the students they can understand what are being
taught, due to that they can achieve their goals.

Teacher is Evaluator

The program evaluation is intended for use primarily by people who have been assigned the role
of program evaluator. The tusk of program evaluator takes on one of two characters, and at times
both depending upon the tusks that have been assigned that can be summative evaluator or
formative evaluator (Taylor & Lynn 1988).

One among the responsibility of a teacher is to evaluate the student progress in their courses or
subjects, a teacher can evaluate students by providing different task such as exercise, and
different assignment. When a teacher prepare the lesson plan for the period he or she should
determine how the lesson should be assessed so as to determine if the students was understand
the lesson or not, this is different to modern media where it is very possible for device such as
computer or projector to evaluate if the lesson was clearly understood or not.

A Teacher is a Role Model

Teacher act as a role model inside the class, even outside the class a teacher is supposed to be an
good example for the students, so that the students can imitate those good things that are being
done by a teacher, for example to be hard worker, good dressing, to be interactive and other
things that can help them in their future life, but modern media cannot play as a role model to the
students because they are not human that means they cannot teach anything to the students, due
to that modern media without a teacher is nothing in the process of learning and teaching.

A teacher maintains and builds discipline of the student

A teacher is the one who build the discipline of the students, and he or she can shape the
discipline of the students through the establishment of rules and regulation which govern the
student behavior inside the class and outside the class, rules and regulation can either be placed
on the notice board so that every student should see and understand the consequences when
disobey rules and regulation set by the teacher , for example a teacher can set the rules for the
student who fail to attend in classroom during class session and so on, those rules will shape
students because they will understand the consequences of failing to adhere rules and regulation,
this is different on modern media because those media cannot shape or maintain the discipline of
the students.

A teacher as a creative and researcher

A teacher in the process of teaching and learning is creative and researcher because he/she is
determining different new teaching strategies so that the students to understand the lesson, also
a teacher is understanding his/her student’s learning abilities so that can help them, also a
teacher use relevant materials to make sure that , things that are being taught and the materials
are relating to each other, also a teacher make sure that his/her lesson is natural and interesting
to the students so as to avoid boring and tiredness to the students due to that the students will like
learning and being participative. So it is different to modern media itself to be creative and
researcher because those are equipment which facilitates teaching and learning to take place that
need a teacher to facilitates.

A teacher act as a curriculum designer

A teacher is responsible for lesson preparation as well as lesson development. A teacher is

supposed to make the materials and different learning facilities of the subject he/she teach
understandable so that to make learning and teaching meaningful to their students, due to that
they can reach the school goal, so modern media cannot replace a classroom teacher because
he/she is the one who prepare learning and teaching materials.

A teacher as a counselor and guider

A teacher is the one who consulted to solve different problems of the students, especial socially
and psychological problem, sometime student face the problem which wipe out their mind
psychological for example the family problem may tear down the performance of the student in
class. the teacher is the one who sit with the student and help them psychological through use
their time to ask about the background of the students and helps to solve the problem, a teacher
also counsel and guide the student who lose hope on their studies or those who misbehave
because teachers are the one who spend a lot of time with students and understand their needs,
but the modern media cannot take this responsibility of counseling and guiding the students so
as to meet their intended goals.

Teachers provide knowledge and develop potential skills

A teacher is said directly to be the source of knowledge, he or she is the one who give
knowledge to the learners according to their level, sometime the student can get knowledge in
the books but teachers knowledge may be environmental specific, a teacher use different
methodologies and technique when provide knowledge to the student example a teacher may
involve students in teaching and learning process, also motivate the learners to perfume better
and also the teacher is the one who utilize student potential through assessing them into various
task and their performance, so modern media cannot replace the position of the teacher because
also those media can provide knowledge but the knowledge of the teacher is environmental
specific.

Apart from the role of the teacher in teaching and learning process, also modern media can
facilitate teaching and learning process on its own as follows;

Through the Use of Internet

The modern media play a great role in teaching and learning process whereby students learn
through internet sources. Example the student can use internet to search different materials
through Google, Browser and Opera Mini, not only that but also students can use internet to
interact with different student worldwide to discus different education matters.

Through the Use of Audio Media

Through audio media, students can learn through tuning on, the radio device and then listen to it,
through listening a student can gain different knowledge which will help him or her in his/her
progress in education matter. This learning can be through radio station or tape recorder.

The Use of Visual Media

Visual media is very important in teaching and learning process whereby learners can learn
through studying a displayed picture. This can be done through projected picture, cartoons, and
maps through the projector and cinema out the aid/assistance of the teacher.

The Use of Audio Visual

Also audio visual is usefully in teaching and learning process whereby students can learn without
the help of teachers. For example when the student see and hear Television Programs about
environmental pollution can learn how to overcome different problems that are caused in
different ways.
Generally; Teachers are very important in teaching and learning process (imparting knowledge to
the learners) due to the fact that he/she is the one who control students and operate different tools
in teaching and learning process, although teaching-learning process will be improved to a great
extent with the help of new media and materials through clarification of concept, stimulation of
groups and individual activities, development of critical awareness, changes of altitude and
encouragement of originality and creativeness.
