Industrial Collaborative Robotics (Cobots) Market
Rise of the Cobots: By 2025, the market for collaborative robotics is
expected to reach $12 billion

http://www.iaasiaonline.com/featured/cobots-game-changer-
industrial-automation/

• Barclays Equity Research estimates that Cobots racked up $120 million

in sales in 2015—but their market share is expected to soar in the
coming years. Part of the reason is cost, which is expected to decline 3
to 5% annually through 2025, according to Barclays. By that year, the
collaborative robotics market is expected to hit $12 billion.
• Universal Robots Currently hold 60% of Cobots market share and
almost every other major Robot manufacturer has either already
launched their own cobot or will very soon launch their own cobots.
Industrial Collaborative Robotics (Cobots) Market
• The 2016 World Robotics Report forecast that collaborative robots or
cobots — robots designed to work side-by-side with human workers —
will drive the automation market going forward. The International Data
Corporation predicted that 30 per cent of all new robotic deployments
by 2018 will be smart cobots that operate three times faster than
today’s robots and are safe for work around humans.
• Safety – An Integral Part Of Design
• Cobots are primarily in-built with safety features for working
alongside human employees; unlike legacy industrial robots that
must be installed with protective barriers and must be operated
from behind safety fences.
• Cobots are designed with safety-related control system functions
that comply with ISO/TS 15066 for cobots, the new technical
specification for cobot production and deployment, established by
the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
• Ease Of Usage And Ergonomics
• The ease of use derived from features such as ease of
programming or customization and user-friendliness also enable
cobots to seamlessly integrate into production or assembly lines in
factories.
Industrial Collaborative Robotics (Cobots) Market
• Flexibility In Deployment
• Cobots can be easily re-deployed for varied functions that require
automation within the same business, at different physical
locations
• Affordable Automation
• Cobots, which can be used for multiple functions due to their
flexibility in deployment, offer higher returns on investment and
faster payback, compared to legacy industrial robots.
• Change The Game With Cobots
• Advances in technology have broken new ground with the advent
of cobots, making automation a lot more exciting today. The
benefits offered by these robots will bring new possibilities to
industrial automation.

Universal Robots History

• Universal Robots was founded in 2005 by the engineers Esben Østergaard, Kasper Støy, and Kristian Kassow. During
joint research at the Syddansk Universitet Odense, they came to the conclusion that the robotics market was
dominated by heavy, expensive, and unwieldy robots. As a consequence they developed the idea to make robot
technology accessible to small and medium-sized enterprises
• In 2009 the first UR5 robots were available on the Danish and German market.
• Since 2010 the company expands its activities steadily. Meanwhile, the robots are distributed globally.
• In 2012 the second robot, UR10 was launched
• At Automatica 2014 in Munich the company launched a totally revised version of its robots.
• One year later, in spring 2015 the table-top robot UR3 was globally launched
• UR was purchased by Teradyne for US$285 million in 2015.
• The robot arms are used in production by companies such as Lear Corporation, Franke (company), Oticon, bridge
metal industries, Johnson & Johnson, Clamcleats, Kunshan Dongwei, VW and BMW. The company received the IERA
award (2012) that honors innovative achievements in the field of robotics and was named one of Denmark's 30 most
important export companies and thus included in the "ExportCanon" in 2013.
• More than 10,000 pr. September 2016 collaborating UR robots are in use worldwide.
• More than 18,000 pr. September November 2017 collaborating UR robots are in use worldwide.
• Universal Robots presents Universal Robots+: A unique ecosystem that adds value for the developer community,
distributors and end consumers of the Danish pioneer in human-robot-collaboration. Universal Robots+ unites the
developer program +YOU with a showroom for presenting innovative Plug&Play applications.

Universal Robots and Artificial Intelligence one example
A startup called Embodied Intelligence plans to change that with robots that learn
through observation, experimentation, and repetition. And they will be trained by human tele-
operators wearing virtual-reality goggles.
If the startup can achieve some of what it aims to, it could have a huge impact on manufacturing
and perhaps other industries. New approaches that make robots more adroit and quicker to
learn would shake up the way work is done.
Embodied Intelligence was founded by Pieter Abbeel, a professor at UC Berkeley, along with
several of his star students. Abbeel is an expert in machine learning, and he has done some
groundbreaking work training robots to do difficult tasks through practice and experimentation
