Where it all
began

Atwima Boko Village, Kumasi, Ghana

2

Where we
are (for now…)
Uniform was made by 14 young single mothers on a
3 year Empowerment Programme learning
seamstress skills. We supported them by paying for
all of their full final year costs for the programme,
included in the total cost of the school build.

Process Research
Conducted with local Schools assessing build quality, classroom sizes, facilities, Islamic
education and more.

Land availability
Boko Community kindly donated land nearby Boko Mosque .

Community consultation
Consulted local community and chief Imam to consider their input and suggestions.

Architectural drawings
Completed by local architect for 4 classrooms, 6 toilets and staff office.

Ghana Education Service school adoption

Successful discussions for local authority to adopt school and provide staff. This
process usually takes 2+ years but GES were extremely happy with the school.

Islamic Education Authority discussion

Successful discussions to provide qualified Islamic teachers for morning session.

School build

and more.

Foundations being laid

Build
Bricks being made ready for laying

Typically in Ghana, basic

structures take 10+ years to build
as they are gradually funded by
the local community. Foundations
may be built and left for many
years until enough money is
raised for the next build stage.

Four classrooms structure rising. Green Mosque can be seen next door.

“The quality of the school is equivalent to a

private Ghanaian school.”
Local teacher Toilet drainage

Internal ceiling and plastering

All schools we visited had

insufficient toilet facilities. Most
public schools had over 600 pupils
with no toilets and pupils
defecating around the school.

Roofing, outdoor plastering and window/door frames. Toilet and office

entrance can be seen to the left.
6

“It would have cost the Ghana Education Service

£35,000 to build this school structure.”
Director, Ghana Education, Kumasi
Furniture, fans, paint
