Lesson 4 – Formation of the Moon Phases

SOL 4.7b.2

Link

Students will complete the R.A.P. Briefly share R.A.P. responses.

Engage and Educate

Review the phases of the Moon from the previous lesson. Go over the W.O.W. and tell students that they
will be exploring more about the phases of the Moon by going to 4 different stations. Then, divide students
into 4 groups. Each group should start at a different station. Make sure students are able to visit all 4
stations in the class period. Briefly go over the stations as a whole group before beginning the activities.

Computer Station (students should work in pairs)

Selected United Streaming Video Clips: ”A Closer Look at the Moon: Space Science Series”, “Moon
Dance: A Spin Around the Solar System”
Website Simulation: http://www.harcourtschool.com/activity/moon_phases

Drawing Station
Each student will receive an 11x17-inch sheet of black construction paper and fold it into 8 sections.

Fold paper in half lengthwise. Then fold in half crosswise twice. (See model below).

Then, they will use a small piece of chalk to draw and label the 8 phases of the Moon in order. The chalk
will represent the bright part of the Moon.

Experiment Station (set up 2 lamp stations away from each other)

One section of the room should be darkened for this experiment to be successful. Students will take turns
using the lamp as the Sun. The lamp should be situated on a table at the eye level of the students. The
student will represent the Earth standing approximately 5-feet away from the lamp. They will hold a
Styrofoam ball (Moon) skewered onto a pencil or stick at arms length. Starting by facing the lamp,
students will slowly rotate to the left. Keeping the Moon raised slightly above their heads. Along the way,
they will see the 8 phases of the Moon appear on the Styrofoam ball. Optional: number and place
masking tape on the floor to identify where the student should stop as they are rotating to see each phase.

Concentration Station
Students will use the Phases of the Moon matching cards and play concentration. They should match the
picture with the name of the phase. Refer to document “Lesson 4 Matching Cards.doc”.
Active Learning

Students will complete W.I.O., using the information in the W.O.W. and from the work stations.

Reflect

Do a whole group share about what they learned at the different stations.

Now and Then
Next, students will expand their understanding of Earth.

Extension:
Students can track the phases of the Moon over the course of a month using the Moon calendar provided in
“Lesson 4 Moon Calendar.doc”.

Teacher Materials
2 Lamps without shades (Sun) or 2 large flashlights
2 Styrofoam balls (Moon)
“Lesson 4 Matching Cards.doc” (3 sets)
