How Illegal Gambling Affects Thai Society?

Gambling is one of the big problems in the world. Illegal gambling can make

people addicted in many ways such as Casino, Sport gambling, or Cards game. Some

people around the world are addicted to illegal gambling which can influence people

around them such as debt problem, or mental health problem. Some countries do not care

about gambling too much for example, America, Australia, and Makau but others countries

are strict about it. One of the countries that is strict about illegal gambling is Thailand.

Many people in Thailand still gambling even it an illegal which makes a big effect in Thai

societies. Its make many Thai people have difficult time to keep money or the relationship

with family. The purpose of this research report is to show the consequences of illegal

gambling in Thai society in order to provide information in preventing it. The author uses

eight academic articles from different sources. The effect of gambling can cause many

problems such as relationship, finance, and robbery.

Gambling Addiction

Gambling can make people addicted to it. According to the Felisa Daskeo (n.d),

she wrote the article about reasons why people should not gambling. This article show

how the gambling affect the society. One of the reasons why gambling should be illegal

is because it can make people addicted to it and can affect many things. Gambling is

addictive which causes people spend more money on gambling. People get addicted to

gambling because they dream that some time they may get lucky and win big money.

First start, most of the people who gambling is for relax and hope to get big win but

after that they ended up hooked to the vice. What hooks them is when they win for the

first time and they want more so they continue play gambling and addicted to it.

Addiction to the gambling will not happen if that person had full control of themself

which means those people will know what and when to stop but there are less people

that can control of themself People who think to get rich from the gambling, their life

may break up or the debt may get larger and larger.

Reference to Addiction resource page reveals that gambling addiction is a

serious brain disease. It can affect how a person develops a fetish for various forms of

gambling such as sport gambling, cards game, or roulette etc. In many cases, the

gambler will always think about gambling all time. They think about what they are

going to play in the next time this make them addicted to it. Preoccupied about

gambling could cause a enormous stress on many part of their life time and health. For

example, it could cause problem on their job, school performance, money status, and

relationships. The gambling addiction can occur in three phases. First phases is winning

phases. People who win the gambling will continue gamble because of the perception of

winning streak. Second phase is losing phases. People who losing money from gamble

will continue gambling to earn the losing money back. Last phases is desperation phase.

People will take irrational risks in hope for a big win that will offset all previous losses.

From this three phases, it show why people are addicted to gambling and not try to stop

from gambling.

The research of Thai PBS pointed out that Thai teenager under twenty years old

had gambling experience before. It was revealed that 40% of Thai teenagers have

gambling addiction experiences, while 60% of the Thai population said they learn to

gamble when they were teenagers. The society of Thailand made many people addiction

to gambling.

The study by Anders show that many Thai people addicted to gambling such

lottery. Lottery also one type of gambling but Thai government did not made it illegal

because government make a lot of money on lottery. About 16 millions people in

Thailand addicted to lottery which made people spend money around seventy six billion

bath in 2014.

Illegal Gambling

Gambling should be illegal because of many reasons. The work of Marilyn

Lancelot indicated five reasons why gambling should be illegal. Five reasons why

gambling should be illegal are the cost of gambling to society, fraud from gambling,

availability of gambling facilities increases risk of problem gambling, gambling take

advantage on poor people, and the inequality of government created by gambling.

Gambling costs society about a billion annually. The society costs of gambling

addictions will eventually impact careers, physical and mental health issues,

bankruptcy, divorce, crimes, and treatment. Those gamblers rely on the welfare of the

unemployment benefits in United States of America which made gambler do not need

to have job and have money to gambling. That impact the government because the

money for unemployment could reach a billion dollar per year. The fraud of gambling

can see a lot in government especially in India. The government addicted to the revenue

and income of money from the gambling and lotteries which made the government likes

to corruption. In many states in America, gambling is easy to find and gamble are also

easy to entice people who never gamble before. The increasing many types of

gambling also made people who gamble have many ways to gamble and appeal to many

people into gambling. For example, casino, sport betting, or lotteries. Most people can

see that gambling exploits poor people because it can take advantage on the people who

have no luck and destroy their whole life and so they get corrupted. The last problem is

double standard of government. Lotteries is one kind of the gambling but government

do not make it as an illegal things. Government can raise the taxes by using the lotteries

in effective way.

The Effects of Gambling

Gambling can cause many effects in Thai society. According to The Cabin

Bangkok, Thai people may seek many opportunities on gambling such as betting on

football games, online gambling, illegal secret casinos and gambling dens. Gambling in

Thailand is illegal but Thai people still gamble because of the addiction. The addiction

to gambling may cause the financial consequences. Also high levels of unmanageable

debt, are the most obvious effects of gambling addiction. With those people who get

suffer from the gambling, they may sell the major assets of themselves such as home

and cars. Sometimes those people who do not have anymore money to play may borrow

money from loan sharks which make them have more dept. The debt that gambler

created can made them steal money from their friends, family, their work place, and

other relative place that they can go. The personalities of person who addicted to

gambling may change. The changing can occur in lying, or neglect in responsibilities.

Lying occur when those gambler attempts to hide their addiction from their family,

friends, and people around them. The dishonesty in gambler cause serious strain on

relationship. The personal relation can get damage from the irritability and

defensiveness the most happened on gambling addiction. Responsibilities to work and

study also may affect from gambling. The stress of increasing monetary loss and debt

can have damaging effects on emotional well being, affecting moods, triggering mental

attacks, which can reduce the capability of that person on work and education.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this research report shows how illegal gambling could be addict

to people and affect the society. The research shows how we should not gamble. The

effect of gambling can cause many problems such as mental problem, relationship

problem, and finance problem. Therefore, the research can conclude that Thai people

should not gamble and be aware of illegal gambling. This research report recommends

further studies on comparing the effects of illegal gambling between Thailand and

United State of America.
