New words in our dictionary

Dear Readers,
We recently added the word
‘selfie‘ to our Online Dictionary.
Many people use this word now
and our team thought it was a
good word to include. A ‘selfie’
is a picture of yourself that you
take with your camera or your
mobile phone. Another new
word this month is ‘phablet’. It’s
a gadget that is a phone and
a tablet. Technology is really
important because a lot of new
words are created to talk about
gadgets and things we do with
them.
But how do we decide which
new words to include in our
dictionary and when? Every
year, we add about 1,000 words
and there are many people
around the world who help us
choose them. They send us new
words they find in books, songs,
magazines, and, of course, on
the internet. When more than
one person sends us the same
word, it becomes a ‘possible
entry’. We then talk about each
word and decide how important
it is.
In the past, people needed to
use a word for more than two
or three years before it could
go in the dictionary. This isn’t
how it works today. Dictionaries
contain words that almost
everyone uses and words that
become popular very quickly.
A word like ‘selfie’ appears one
day on the internet and the
same week thousands of people
might be using it around the
world. Send us your word, and
if people start using it a lot, you
might see it in our dictionary!

Hello! I’m Karine. I’m 12 years old and I live in Québec,

Canada. We speak two languages here, English and French. I
speak French better so I’m writing this blog in English because
I need to practise every day.
Today I’m going to tell you about the best season to visit
Québec: winter! It’s very cold in winter, but there are some
cool things you can do. My favourite is the Hôtel de Glace, or Ice Hotel, which is only ten minutes
from the centre of Québec City, the capital of Québec. It opened in 2001 for the first time and
every year they build it again! It melts in April, so when the cold weather starts, in November and
December, they have to build it again. It opens in January every year.
My parents stayed at the Ice Hotel for two nights last February. They said it was a strange
experience. Their bed was made of ice and they had special sleeping bags to keep them warm
during the night. There’s a café in the hotel and it’s all made of ice, too: the tables and chairs, and
the glasses and the plates.
The Ice Hotel is fun for children as well and it’s open to schools. Children can walk inside and
try the big ice slide. They can visit the ice workshop and see how they make the hotel each year.
I’m going to go to the opening night in January. There are going to be amazing fireworks! I’m
going to take photos and put them on my blog.
