Registration Information Twentieth-Century Literature Conference Thursday, Friday, Saturday - February 22-24, 2001

The Conference will be held on the main (Belknap) campus of the University of Louisville, Third and Eastern Parkway, Louisville, Kentucky (from Interstate 65 via Exit 133).

The Seelbach Hilton, 500 Fourth Avenue (at Muhammed Ali) has been designated as the Conference hotel (tel. 800-333- 3399; 502-585-3200). The hotel provides an airport shuttle. The Conference will provide transportation between the Seelbach and the University at regular intervals. See back pages of this program for the hotel-campus-hotel bus schedule.

All times shown are Eastern Standard Time.

Registration is required of aU participants listed in the program. Registration packets and badges will be available in Room 300, Bingham Humanities Building. University of Louisville and Metroversity faculty and students attend at no charge, but are asked to sign in. The general public is invited to hear the guest speakers.

A courtesy coat check will be provided on the 3rd floor of the Hwnanities Building. Refreshments will be served in the registration area on Thursday from 9:30 - 2:00, on Friday 8: IS - 2:00, and on Saturday from 8: 15 - 1 :00. A message board for the use of conference participants will be located outside Room 300. Please consult the board regularly for notice of last-minute program changes.

Sectional meetings will be held in the classrooms of Bingham Humanities Building. Creative presentations will be given in Ekstrom Library. Special Guest presentations have been scheduled in nearby auditoriums. Details of date, time and place are printed with each program listing.

All meeting rooms are accessible to the handicapped.

Book vendors will display publications for sale on 9te second floor of the Bingham Humanities Building. A selection of 600ks will also be offered for sale at plenary sessions.

Frank Bidart

Frank Bidart has published five books of poetry. In the Western Night: Collected Poems. 1956-90 (Famar, Straus and Giroux, 1990) contains the contents of the first three volumes, along with new poems. His fifth collection, Desire (FSG, 1997), was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, national Book Award, and national Book Critics Circle Award. His awards include the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Foundation Writer's Award, the Morton Dauwen Zabel Award given by the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Shelley Award of th Poetry Society of America. He teaches at Wellesley College.

Sidonie Smith

Professor of English and Director of Women's Studies at the University of Michigan Sidonie Smith has emerged as a major feminist scholar at the forefront of 20-century autobiographical criticism. She is author of Where I'm Bound: Patterns of Slavery and Freedom in the Black American Autobiography, A Poetics of Women's Autobiography, and Subjectivity, Identity, and the Body. Co-edited collections include De/Colonizing the Subject, Getting a Life, and Women, Autobiography, Theory, all with Julia Watson; Writing New Identities, with Gisela Brinker-Gabler; The Olympics at the Millennium, with Gisela BrinkerGabler; The Olympics at the Millennium, with Kay Schaffer; and Indigenous Australian VOices, with Jennifer Sabbioni and Kay Schaffer. Her most recent book, Moving Lives: 2(Jh-Century Women's Travel Writing, will be brought out by the University of Minnesota Press in Spring 2001.

Dale M. Bauer is Professor of English and Women's Studies at the University of Kentucky. She holds the Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine, and is the author of two books: Feminist Dialogics (Suny) and Edith Wharton's Brave New Politics (Wisconsin). She is also the editor of the Bedford Cultural Edition of The Yellow Wallpaper and co-editor (with Susan Jarret McKinstry) of Feminism, Bakhtin, and the Dialogic. One of her most notable essays is "Feminism: The Other F Word", which gained some notoriety when Lynne Cheney attacked it in the pages of the Wall Street Journal. Her current research interests include feminist pedagogies and middle-aged sex.

Becky Hagenston' s stories have appeared in numerous journals, including TriQuarterly, Shenandoah, Witness, Southern Review, and Threepenny Review. One of her stories was chosen for the 1996 O. Henry Awards anthology, and she has had three stories included as Honorable Mentions in Pushcart Prize anthologies.

Her collection, A Gram of. Mars (Sarabande 1996), received the 1997 Mary McCarthy Prize in Short Fiction, and the 1999 Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award. She has been a Bread Loaf scholar and a fellow at the Sewanee Writers Conference. Hagenston received her MFA from the University of Arizona and her MA from New Mexico State University, where she now teaches.

Eduardo Hens LeOn

The Cuban writer Eduardo Heras Leon (Havanna, 1940) has been invited as Keynote Speaker in Spanish for the 20'" Century Literature Conference. February 2001. He is a well-known and frequently published shortstory writer who two years ago began teaching an ongoing series of workshops on narrative to young aspiring fiction writers from allover Cuba. He just recently retired after many years as Director at the prestigious publishing house Casa de las Americas. Heras Le6n has won several awards for his stories, which have appeared in numerous anthologies, and which have been translated into Portuguese, German, and Italian. Among his best-known works are the short story collections La guerra tuvo sets nombres (1968) and La noche del capitan (1995).

For his keynote address, he will read from a talk about his work (which spans a time period from the 1960s to the present day), and show productions of two ofhis stories on video. In addition, he will participate in a special session on Caribbean literature along with Angel Santiesteban and a Puerto Rican writer, and he will address a gathering sponsored by Spanish Club, open to anyone, discussing the economic restrictions and the current state of publishing in Cuba. He will also be available to visit classes and to meet with students on an informal basis as well.

THE FREDERICK DOUGLASS AND HARRIET TUBMAN SERIES OF 1938-40

February 6-April 22, 2001

Jacob Lawrence is considered one of the foremost American painters of the twentieth century. An African-American artist who grew up in Harlem during the Depression, Lawrence began his career around 1935 in the lingering, vibrant atmosphere of the Harlem Renaissance. This exhibition features two narrative series executed by the artist, which document the struggles of Douglass and Tubman, two renowned nineteenth-century abolitionists.

The exhibition is organized by the Hampton University Museum in Hampton. Virginia
