ABSTRACT

Volume i of this report compares experimental results with

theoretical stress distributions for a flat plate with one nozzle con
figuration and for a flat plate with two closely spaced nozzles attached.
This volume contains the complete test results for a flat plate with
one nozzle attached that was subjected to 1:1 a\d 1:2 biaxial planar
loadings on the plate, to a thrust loading on the nozzle, and to a moment
loading on the nozzle. The plate tested was o • 36 y 0.375 ir.., and
n

the attached nozzle had an outer diameter of ;.625 in. and a 0.250-in.-
thick wall. The nozzle was located in the center of the plate and was
considered to be free of weld distortions and irregularities in the
junction area.

1. INTRODUCTION

Purpose and Scope

The Mechanical Engineering Department of Auburn University in

cooperation with che Solid M-.chanics Department of the Reactor Division,

Oak Ridge National Laboratory, is conducting studies of fiat plates and

hemispherical shells having closely spaced cluster? of holes or nozzles.

The purposes of these studies are to develop a better understanding of

the interaction of closely spaced holes or nozzles under applied loads

and to develop r e l i a b l e experimental data to be us-^d for v e r i f i c a t i o n

of t h e o r e t i c a l s t r e s s analyses of these c o n f i g u r a t i o n s .

In the case of r e l a t i v e l y small nozzles attached to large-diameter

c y l i n d r i c a l or s p h e r i c a l v e s s e l s , the assumption that the effect of

curvature can be neglected i s often made. Consequently, f l a t p l a t e s with

attached nozzle c l u s t e r " are convenient models for studying these p a r

t i c u l a r configurations. The models being studied in the o v e r a l l p r o j e c t

Tennessee. This report contains the r e s u l t s of the t e s t i r g of a f l a t

p l a t e with one nozzle attached (model 6P).

S t r e s s - s t r a i n responses under four loadings were measured on both

surfaces of the p l a t e and of the nozzle. The loadings were 1:1 b i a x i a l

Instrumentation and Measuring

Micro-measurements type EA-06-030YB-120, option SE, s t r a i n gages

were mounted on the p l a t e and nozzle in the junction region. There were

318 gages (or 106 r o s e t t e s ) mounted. The locations of these gages a r e

i d e n t i f i c a t i o n system used. The s t r a i n - g a g e r o s e t t e s consisted of gages

with a 0.030-in. gage length in a "y" configuration; the t o t a l r o s e t t e

grid a r e a could be enclosed in a c i r c l e 0.11 i n . in diameter. Figures

2, 3, and 4 show the t y p i c a l gage alignment. For future reference, note

i s made of the assigned coordinate a x i s .

For data c o l l e c t i o n , a half-bridge c i r c u i t was used. A dummy gage

was used for compensating for temperature e f f e c t s . The dummy gage was

i n s u l a t e d , as were the a c t i v e gages, from a i r c u r r e n t s and other temper

a t u r e influences.

In actual t e s t i n g , a small preload was applied to ti>e model (see

Chap. 3 ) . Two s t r i n g e r s of s t r a i n gages, the maximum capacity of the

d a t a - c o l l e c t i n g equipment, were then read. The model was then fully

loaded, and t'.?e s t r a i n gages were read again. The change in s t r a i n - g a g e

readings was c o r r e l a t e d with the change in load. The model was tnen

unloaded to the preload l e v e l , and the operation was repeated to check

for r e p e a t a b i l i t y . (The readings were found c o n s i s t e n t to within

^8 ( j i n . / i n . ) The two recorded s t r a i n s were then averaged t o g e t h e r . All

repeatable experimental data points have been r e p o r t e d . I t is possible

that sutne of these data points may r e f l e c t undetected influences of a

faulty gage, a nonhomogeneous material in the v i c i n i t y of the gage,

p e c u l i a r i t i e s in model loadings, or possibly instrumentation irregular

ities. The cause of t h i s type of e r r a t i c behavior cannot always be

determined p r a c t i c a b l y .

3. LOADING SYSTEMS FOR FLAT-PLATE MODELS

The model was tested in four ways: by applying two different b i

axial t e n s i l e loads on the plate and by applying axial-compressive and

bending loads on the aczzle. To isoose these loads, the frame shown in

Figs. S and 6 was constructed.

Plate Biaxial Loading

For applying the biaxial load to the plat*», che plate was held

v e r t i c a l l y to minimize the bending of the plate due to i t s own weight.

Thirty-two hydraulic cylinders (eight pulling on each side of the plate)

allowed the plate to "float" and applied a uniform load on each edge that

was aligned vith the plane of the p l a t e . Each cylinder was positioned

on the loading frame through a specially made, s e l f - a l i g n i n g washer,

which was i t s e l f positioned in the place of the p l a t e .

Since the hydraulic pressure in the cylinders must overcome a

certain amount of f r i c t i o n between the O-ring and the cylinder wall, the

hydraulic pressure inside the cylinders i s not equal to the force exerted

on the specimen by the hydraulic cylinders. Therefore, i t was necessary

to increase the hydraulic pressure until the desired force was attained.

Once t h i s correction factor was determined, the cylinder forces were

accurate to ±50 l b , and when compared to approximately 10,000 lb of

force on each cylinder at 2090 p s i , t h i s represents an accuracy of about

0.52.

By varying the pressures of the hydraulic cylinders, different stress

s t a t e s could be induced in the plate. What was of interest here was

simulating the pressure membrane stresses in spherical and cylindrical

shells. This was done by producing 1:1 and 1:2 planar biaxial s t r e s s e s ,

respectively. For the 1:1 b i a x i a l load, a pressure of 2000 p s i in each

hydraulic cylinder was selected because i t gave reasonable magnitudes

of strains without causing y i e l d i n g in che models; the corresponding

s t r e s s was 6151 p s i . For the 1:2 t e s t , the pressure was 1000 psi i>-

one group of parallel cylinders and 2000 psi in the other group. The

s t r e s s e s were 3075 and 6151 p s i , respectively.

A calibration procedure was worked out to examine the biaxial s t r e s s

f i e l d produced by t h i s b i a x i a l loading system. F i r s t , ~ f l a t plate

(model 2P) was mounted in the load frame. The central area of rlie plate

w*s strain gaged (the biaxial strain gages can be seen in Figs. 5 and 7 ) ,

and equal loads were applied to the plate. The strain readings increased

linearly with the applied load. Further, an area 14 i n . i n diameter in

the central portion of the plate was e s s e n t i a l l y in an equibiaxial s t a t e

of s t r e s s . Biaxial gage readings in this area had a nominal value of

147 u i n . / i n . and varied ±4 u i n . / i n . The variation was considered p r i

marily due to instrumentation errors and temperature changes since i t

appeared random. This biaxial strain condition corresponded to a

biaxial s t r e s s f i e l d of 6151 p s i and was produced by a 7000-psi pressure

ip the hydraulic loading cylinders.

When model 6P was t e s t e d , i t was noted that the data fror. zero load

to f u l l load were not linear in the low-load region. This was attributed

to the nozzle's producing a moment arm that induced bending s t r e s s e s in

the p l a t e , to the fact chat the plate was not exactly v e r t i c a l , and

possibly to other small alignment d i f f i c u l t i e s . Since t h i s nonlinear'ty

did not exist at higher loads, a preload of 500 psi (hydraulic-cylinder

pressure) was applied to the plate, and Chen the desired load was super

imposed. This procedure generated linear and repeatable data within

t8 win./in.

Mozzle Thrust and Moment Loading

For applying the axial and bending loads to the end of the nozzle,

rhe load frame was turned so that the plate was horizontal (Fig. 6 ) . The

hydraulic cylinders were removed, and the plate was bolted to the load

separated the p l a t e from the a n g l e - i r o n supports to prevent warping of

the p l a t e .

For the a x i a l l o a d , a hydraulic c y l i n d e r was p o s i t i o n e d on the load

frame t o apply a compressive f o r c e (through a mechanical load c e l l ) to

the n o z z l e along i t s c e n t e r l i n e . The load was read from a load c e l l

with an accuracy of ±25 l b . The f u l l load a p p l i e d was 2000 l b .

For the bending l o a d , a T-shaped arm 5 0 . 4 4 i n . long was c e n t e r e d

4. DISCUSSION OF DATA

1:1 t i a x i a l Loading

For 1:1 b i a x i a l l o a d i n g , normalized s t r e s s components at comparable

l o c a t i o n s on s t r i n g e r s 3 arJ 11 would be expected "o be i d e n t i c a l ; com

puted v a l u e s of a >/16 i n . from the j u n c t i o n on s t r i n g e r s 3 and 11 are

17

0.824 and 0.839, respectively, and the values for o for the same l o c a

tions are 1.362 and 1.275. Similar comparisons of o on stringers 1, 5,

and 13 at points 1/16 i n . from the junction shown o = 0.700, 0.776, 0.705,

respectively, and a = 1.232, 1.364, 1.146. Gage placement i s very

influential in the region near the junction, and the variations are

attributed to t h i s . More generally, the r e s u l t s along stringer 1 should

duplicate the results along stringer 5. Comparison of the curves (Figs.

Al and A3 in Appencix A) bears t h i s out.

The stress along the nozzle avav from the junction should reduce

to zero, while the principal s t r e s s e s along the plate away from the

junction should reduce to unity on both the inside and outside of the

plate. These trends are also evident from Figs. Al and A3. As expected,

the principal axes and the x, y, z axes coincide.

The normalized maximum shear s t r e s s in the p l a t t should approach

0,5 away from the junction, while rhe s t r e s s i n t e n s i t y should approach 0 .

Figures A7 to A12 in Appendix A indicate such trends.

1:2 Biaxial Loading

Similar comments to those that were made Tor the 1:1 load car be

made for the 1:2 load. In addition, i t would be expected that the r a t i o

of a 's in stringers at right angles to each other on the plate would

approach 1:2, while the ratio of a 's would approach 2 : 1 . Also, ratios

<f a r.o J in stringer ; at right angles to each ether would be expected

x y
to approach a 2 1 ratio. These trends are observed.
18

Nozzle Leadings

For nozzle a x i a l loading, s t r i n g e r s 1, 3, and 5 should be i d e n t i c a l

i n response. This trend i s noted i n F i g s . A37, A38, and A39. And for

nozzle bending loadings i n which the aoaent vector i s directed along a

given s t r i n g e r , the plane of t h a t s t r i n g e r should behave as a n e u t r a l

p l a n e , while che peak s t r e s s e s should occur in a s t r i n g e r a t r i g h t angles

to t h i s . These trends a r e evident in the d a t a .

APPENDIX B. EXPERIMENTAL DATA: STRESSES AND STRAINS

IN A FLAT PLATE WITH AN ATTACHED NOZZLE

The stress and strain data for the experiments described in this

volume are presented in the 120 tables of this appendix. The data for

the 1:1 biaxial test are presented in the first 30 tables, the data for

the 1:2 biaxial test in the second 30 tables, that for the nozzle thrust

loading in the third, and for the bending-moment load in the last.

Within each of these groups of 30 tables, 10 tablss of data for stringer

1 appear first, followed by similar data for stringers 3 and 5 (see Fig.

3 in the text for stringer identification). Because of the repetition

of results due to the effects of symmetry, only the data from stringers

1, 3, and 5 are included. For each of these stringers, stress/strain

data are given or first the plate and then the nozzle (5 tables each).

These darri consist of the strains, total stresses, principal stresses,

maximum shear stress, angle of principal stress, and scress intensity.

Normalized meobrane stresses and bending stresses are presented for both

the "inner" and "outer" sides where appropriate.

The recorded strains are in microinches per inch, the principal

angles are in degrees, and all other values in the tables are noraalized.

(See the discussion of normalization in the beginniiig of Appendix A.)

The rosette positions are given in a five-digit rode, the first

digit of which indicates the surface on which the rosette was located

(1 = nozzle side of plate, 2 = opposite side of plate, 3 = outside of

nozzle, and 4 = inside of nozzle), the second and third digits indicate

the stringer number, and the fourth and fifth give the distance from the
58

rosette to the junction in sixteenths of an inch ( e . g . , "62" would indi

cate that the rosette was 62 sixteenths or 3.875 in. from the junction).
An entry of "3000" in the tables indicates that no data were available
for that location.
