Local Upgrade

1 Introduction

Local Upgrade is used to upgrade the software in the following MINI-LINK units:

• MMU and MMU2

• SMU and SMU2

• ATU, ATU B, and ATU C

• SAU

• MINI-LINK E Micro

• RAU

Note: Local Upgrade cannot be used to upgrade MMU2 B or MMU2 C (or

later), or the RAUs connected to them. These units are upgraded using
the management tools for MINI-LINK TN.

2 System Requirements

Check that you have the following required items before installing and using
Local Upgrade:

• One of the following operating systems:

− Microsoft Windows 2000
− Microsoft Windows XP

• One unused serial port (COM port)

• One standard serial cable to connect the PC to the MINI-LINK equipment

Using Local Upgrade

3 Installing Local Upgrade

Note: You must be logged on as a system administrator to install Local

Upgrade.

To install Local Upgrade:

1. Start the installation program by following the instructions that came with
the MINI-LINK Service Software CD-ROM.

Note: If you have obtained the Local Upgrade installation program

separately, double-click the Setup.exe file to start the installation
program.

2. Follow the instructions on the screen.

4 Using Local Upgrade

Note: The new software will be activated automatically as soon as the new
software has been downloaded.

Note: P-Mark and Transmitter will remain unaffected. Loops will be turned off.

To upgrade the software in a unit:

1. Connect the serial port on the PC to the O&M port on the unit you want to
upgrade. The unit must remain in its position in the access module, with
the power on.

Note: If you want to upgrade the RAU, connect the PC to the MMU.

Local Upgrade

2. On the Start menu, first click Programs and then Local Upgrade.

The Local Upgrade dialog opens.

3. In the COM port list, select the COM port (serial communication port on the
PC) to which you have connected the equipment.

4. Click Start Upgrade.

Note: If you want to install new load files (see Step 8 on page 5 on the
next page), click Install Load Files and select the files you want to
install.

5. If you are connected to an MMU, the Select Unit dialog opens.

6. Click a button to upgrade that unit.

Note: Always upgrade the MMU before the RAU.

Note: For MINI-LINK E MMUs: The radio must be connected to the MMU
when upgrading from an MMU software version earlier than R4A.
If the MMU software is of version R4A or later, you can upgrade
the software even if the radio is not connected, but this is not
recommended since the upgrade procedure takes longer time.

For MINI-LINK TN MMU2s: The MMU2 software can be upgraded

even if the radio is not connected.

5 Troubleshooting

If the program fails to upgrade a unit, please check that:

• The serial cable is connected to the O&M port on the right unit.

• The serial cable is connected to a COM port on the PC.

• You have selected the right COM port in the program (see Step 3 on page
4).

• The serial cable is OK.
