ENGINEERING PROFESSIONALS AND THE FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION

Integrity has a deep connection with corruption throughout history both be concepts and
ethical realities. Many multinational companies and organizations as well as countries are
facing serious cultural problems especially in relation to integrity and corruption issues. It is
evident from the most corrupt countries that lack of integrity is harmful to a country's
economy, society, politics, and the overall environment. Corruption in a country is unethical
behaviour which tends to diminish the trust that citizens have towards the government,
leadership and the politics of the nation. Integrity must be instilled in everyone in order to
eliminate corruption in the society.

Mr Azlan Shah, an auditor from Sustainable Energy Development Authority Malaysia

(SEDA) explained integrity as perfection, honesty and sincerity. He further added integrity as
doing the right things even when no one is watching. People that have strong moral integrity
will not be easily influenced by money and they are said to be good people in this world. A
person with integrity portrays these traits which are: (1) trustworthy, (2) accountable, (3)
reliable, (4) appreciate others,(5) humble, (6) genuine, (7) kind, (8) working to find a
solution, (9) generous, and (10) will raise others up. When people lack integrity within
themselves, they tend to commit crime such as corruption. Mr Husney from Institute of
Integrity Malaysia (INTEGRITI) said the best way to fight corruption is to have education
and knowledge. He accentuated students to have a strong knowledge, generic skills, and also
strong moral personalities not only to eradicate corruption but also to avert ourselves from
commit such act.

Bribery comprises of several types namely valuable items such as cash, cars, and
credit cards: gifts such as luxury brand handbags or watches; job offers; and services like
sexual and protection. Gifts can be bribe if the giver and receiver has official dealings and it
will influences the decision making process. Mr Nuri from Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah
Malaysia (SPRM) strictly emphasized the penalty that can be convicted to the felony which
are imprisonment maximum 20 years and fine not less than 5 times the value of gratification
or minimum RM10, 000. Usually we can recognize those who involved in bribery as they
show the same symptoms for example abnormal lavish lifestyle, failure to declare income and
assets, and have unusual close relationship with client. Not only commit corruption can
jeopardize oneself but it also can bring harm to the country and society. Bribery will become
norm in the societies which then lead to country’s economy, politics, and environment are at
stake. A corrupt society cannot thrive, its economy is harmed, level of public trust and
confidence to an organization decreases; government revenue is leaked; there is smuggling of
weapons and human; and serious crime arises.

In conclusion, corruption is the cancer of so many of our problems in the world today.
It only bring negative consequences and impairment to society, it is a behaviour that is worth
combating and do whatever is possible to eliminate. The problem is that the one who have the
power to fight corruption has no interest to do it until is so embedded in our society that it
became the normal thing to do. Therefore, young generations as the future leaders of this
country, the makers of tomorrow that will shape this nation have to instil and promote
integrity to eradicate corruption so that we can built a model corrupt free society that we can
be proud of.
