REGIONAL MASS TRAINING OF TEACHERS FOR CRITICAL CONTENT IN MUSIC

AND ARTS GRADE 7

Narrative Report

May 15, 2018 - DAY 1

The Regional Mass Training of K to 10 Teachers on Critical Content for Music and
Arts was held last May 15-21, 2018 at Macagang Hotel and Resort, Nabua, Caarines Sur.
Educational Program Supervisors, MAPEH teachers, and some non-MAPEH teachers
teaching MAPEH of Bicol region were gathered to participate on the 7-day day training in
Music and Arts.

The training started with the arrival and registration of the participants, orientation,
opening program and pre-test for the participants. Those were done successfully as the
trainers and staff worked together harmoniously with cooperation and camaraderie.

The orientation for the participant was conducted by Mr. Francisco Bulalacao Jr.
at around 3:00pm in the afternoon followed by the pictorial by Division. The Opening
Program officially started at around 4:00 pm hosted by Mr. Randy Briz. The division
superintendent of Camarines Sur, Cecille Bernadette Palanca-Rivera shared a short yet
inspirational message to welcome the participants of the Regional Mass training of K to
10 Teachers. The hall was filled with different people with different perspective about the
7-day training, however they were all gathered for one reason which is to learn about the
Critical Content for Music and Arts.

A debriefing and evaluation was done after the dinner to assess the day and to
plan for some necessary changes on the schedules. The Day 1 was indeed a long day
yet successful one. The facilitators successfully managed to address all the issues
encountered during the registration as some of the participants were not included on the
list and were able to came up with a new plan with regard to schedule of the training
sessions. The participants who’ve travelled all the way to Nabua, Camarines Sur were
accommodated by Macagang Hotel and Resort and Regal hotel where they can
comfortably rest for the following days ahead of the 7-day training.

May 16, 2018 - DAY 2

The first day of the breakout sessions and training lectures was a productive one
for the participants. The day started with the participants having their breakfast at their
respective classrooms. Lectures begun with Philippine festivals and theatre forms with
Ms. Joyce D. Fesico for Class A and Ms. Rhodora Blanca L. Mirabuena for Class B as
facilitators and consumed half of the day for it. Ms. Nemia Garcia and Ms. Cynthia Sorra
were tasked for the Elements and Principles of Arts for the rest of the classes. A rotation
of schedule was followed by the facilitators leading each class to learn and experience all
the topics for the day.

Before totally ending the day, a debriefing and evaluation was conducted by Mr.
Francisco Bulalacao Jr. to ensure the quality training being asked from the facilitators for
the benefit of the participants. The second day of the training ended successfully despite
the quick change of plan. It was understandable that adjustments were made due to the
delay of materials requested because the training was held earlier from the original
schedule. At the end of the day, the participants enjoyed and learned a lot from the first
day of the sessions. The facilitators were also flexible enough to make the necessary
adjustments with the new schedule given the circumstances they had on hand.

Overall, the participants were quite positive about the learnings and insights that they
were expecting to obtain from the training. Collectively, they were eager to learn more
from the other facilitators as the days progressed. They were completely aware that in
terms of content/knowledge and pedagogical approaches, they needed to be equipped
for them to be able to provide quality music and art education.
May 17, 2018- DAY 3

Topics such as Rhythm and Tempo, and Dynamics and Timbre were discussed
during this day. Mrs. Rhodora Blanca L. Mirabuena together with Mrs. Ellen Kachiri
Priela-Inting facilitated the session for Class A and C while Ms. Flora Arimado and Mrs.
Joyce D. Fesico had the sessions in Class B and D with the same topic; Rhythm and
Tempo. Mrs. Nemia Garcia and her partner Mrs. Cynthia Sorra handled all classes
discussing Dynamic and Timbre simultaneously. During last night’s debriefing and
evaluation, the group decided to change the topics to be discussed on this day due to the
delay of materials. Trainers find the situation challenging but managed to handle it with
optimism.
The day ended with post conference and sharing of experiences. Mrs. Sorra,
shared some clarifications that was raised in Class A regarding the instrument
classification of piano. The trainers decided to give the answer on such matter on the last
day of the training during the Clearing of House so that all other participants from different
classes will hear the answer to the said clarification. The trainers again decided to make
changes on the topics to be discussed on the next day since some of the materials
needed for the other topics (Painting and Sculpture) were not yet delivered.

May 18, 2018- DAY 4

The much-awaited day of Mr. Randy Briz. Day four was his day, for he finally got
his chance to meet the classes for his topic. In the morning, he facilitated and discussed
Melody and Form with Class A. Working with him was Ms. Ellen Kachiri P. Inting who
took care of the discussions on Harmony and Texture with class C. Ms. Nemia Garcia
were assigned with the topic weaving for classes B and D alternately with Ms. Cynthia
Sorra as the facilitator for architecture in all of the classes. The usual manner of rotation
schedule was done for the day.
Although the topics on this day were a little bit hard for the participants, the
facilitators made it easy for them by adjusting some activities and guiding them to get the
desired output and understanding among the participants. Some supervisors were also
present during the sessions. They helped through observing both the participants and
the facilitators and giving feedback for improvement. Generally, it was a fruitful day for
everyone involved in the training- from the participants to the facilitators.

May 19, 2018- DAY 5

The last day of breakout sessions. Mr. Randy Briz tackled Melody and Form in
Class B and D while Mrs. Ellen Kachiri Inting discussed Harmony and Texture in Class A
and C for the remaining music topics. On the other hand, Mr. Melvin Magistrado facilitated
the painting session in all classes while Ms. Flora Arimado together with Mrs. Rhodora
Blanca Mirabuena facilitated the 2 hour allotted time for sculpture in all classes.
Expected transfer of learning from participants were already evident during this
day. Most of the participants’ outputs from the different topics presented this day were the
application and synthesis of all they have learned in this course of training.
Later in the afternoon, Mr. Bulalacao called for a short meeting for all the demo
teachers to address some queries and clarifications regarding the content and the flow of
the training. He emphasized that teachers should teach students with a long term goal as
the culminating activity for the 4th quarter and short term goals or the foundation as small
steps and preparation that will make the culminating activity possible. This mindset would
let teachers learn continuity of practice and be congruent to K-12 curriculum spirag
progression of learning.

May 20, 2018- DAY 6

After the 5-day eye brow scorching sessions, the training comes up with its concluding
activity which is the demo-teaching and the post-test. This is to assess participants with
the knowledge they gain and on how they are going to impart the inputs they earned from
the 5 days session to their students.

The demo-teaching was done in the morning of the sixth day of the training, May 20,
2018. Each class comprises of four demo-teachers who simultaneously conducts team
teaching in their respective classes of their chosen topics based from the assigned area
(Music & Art). The demo-teaching shows the process on how the products, outputs done
on day to day activity be of use in each concluding activity in every quarter and even be
useful in the culminating activity in 4th quarter. It means that the teacher must plan for the
final/culminating activity as their goal and will design day to day activity that would help in
achieving the goal. Post conference done right after the demo teaching.

Post-test was done in the afternoon. And it followed by group practice and preparation of
props, costume for the culminating activity based from the topic discussed by the demo
teachers.

Indeed, it was a worth satisfying activity seeing that the teacher-participants really enjoy
the seminar, gain new insights and encourage to be music and arts teachers. Truly I
believe that teacher-participants will go back in their respective station equipped with the
necessary skills and knowledge as agent of learning among its clientele-the students.
