OBJECTIVE

This is an addendum to the BJ Services Company Laboratory Report No.:

030628S. The objective of the analysis is to determine the corrosion rate on
carbon steel exposed to 1.2% Sodium Hypochlorite at 190F for 12 hours.

CORROSION TESTS @ 190F WITH 1.2% SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE

New pre-cut coiled tubing coupon was used for the test. The coiled tubing
coupon was cleaned with detergent to remove grease and other substances,
prior to testing. The cleaned coupon was soaked in acetone for five minutes and
placed in the oven to dry.

Test Procedure @ Atmospheric Pressure

1. The coupon was weighed to an accuracy of ± 0.01 grams to determine

starting weight.
2. The surface area of the coupon in square centimeters (cm 2) was measured
using calipers to determine dimensions.
3. The coupon was placed into 200 ml of fluid in glass beaker.
4. The beaker was placed in the pre-heated waterbath at 190F and left to react
in the acid for 4 hours.
5. After the incubation period, the coupon was removed from the test solution.
6. The coupon was rinsed with distilled water then immersed in acetone for five
(5) minutes and dried in the oven at 205F (96C) for one hour. Coupon was
then cooled in the desiccator to room temperature.
7. The coupon was weighed to an accuracy of ± 0.01 grams to determine final
weight.

Results:

CORROSION
OBSERVATIONS
RATE, lb/ft2

 The coiled tubing is covered with streaks of rusty brown and

black precipitate.
 When the coiled tubing was scrubbed to remove the
0.039
precipitate, severe signs of pitting were evident.
 Heavy brown precipitate and white crystalline (salt)
precipitate settled in the beaker.

The result indicated that the corrosion rate of the coiled tubing carbon steel in
the sodium hypochlorite solution is higher than the accepted standard of 0.02
lb/ft2.. Also, even this result is misleading since severe pitting was evident. Pitting

corrosion is characterised by severe local attack rather than uniform metal lost.
This can cause rapid perforation of the tubing. The implication of this test is that
dilute sodium hypochlorite solution is indeed corrosive to carbon steel and we
would assume that prolonged exposure would be very detrimental.

A futher consideration was the generation of voluminous and potentially

damaging precipitates that could preclude the supposed purpose of the
treatment.

For these reasons alone (there are others) we would strongly counsel against
the use of sodium hypochlorite solutions for mud cake removal.

See below for photos of the coiled tubing and sodium hypochlorite solution after
the 12 hours corrosion test.
