Should There Be Stricter Gun Laws?

Guns are everywhere. Guns are the longs lifetime of history. People sometimes use guns

or have guns for protection and hunting. Guns laws have been around since the beginning of this

country. My first reason is The Second Amendment is not an unlimited right to own guns. My

second reason is more gun control laws would reduce deaths. My third reason is high-capacity

magazines should be banned because they too often turn murder into mass murder. There should

be stricter gun laws.

In my opinion there should be more gun control because more people are dying so we

need more laws for gun control. Gun laws have been around since colonial America.“Gun

control laws are just as old or older than the Second Amendment (ratified in 1791).

Some examples of gun control throughout colonial America included criminalizing the transfer

of guns to Catholics, slaves, indentured servants, and Native Americans; regulating the storage of

gunpowder in homes; banning loaded guns in Boston houses; and mandating participation in

formal gathering of troops and door-to-door surveys about guns owned”. Guns control laws in

the colonial america. People have always had restricted access to guns.

The right to have guns should not be unlimited. “Like most rights, the right secured by

the Second Amendment is not unlimited”. “Courts routinely explained that the right was not a

right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever

purpose”. This is saying that people should not use too many guns for whatever they want. A
Lot of people are dying because of gun shooting everywhere.“There were 464,033 total gun

deaths between 1999 and 2013: 270,237 suicides (58.2% of total deaths); 174,773

homicides (37.7%); and 9,983 unintentional deaths (2.2%)”. Many deaths were a result

of guns. There are also high capacity magazines that cause many deaths. ”When high-capacity

magazines were used in mass shootings, the death rate rose 63% and the injury rate rose 156%”.

There were a lot of mass shootings and many deaths that happened because of high capacity

magazines. Because of there are not stricter gun control laws a lot of people are dying.

Some people believe however, that there should be less gun control laws but their

thinking is insufficient. They feel there will not be crime if gun control laws are not as strict..

“John R. Lott, Jr., PhD, author of More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and Gun

Control Laws, stated, "States with the largest increases in gun ownership also have the largest

drops in violent crimes... The effect on 'shall-issue' [concealed gun] laws on these crimes [where

two or more people were killed] has been dramatic. When states passed these laws, the number

of multiple-victim shootings declined by 84 percent. Deaths from these shootings plummeted on

average by 90 percent and injuries by 82 percent”. Still there are many who die from guns, even

children. "American children under age 15 were nine times more likely to die of a gun

accident than children in other advanced wealthy countries… About 200 Americans go

to emergency rooms every day with gunshot wounds."

More strict gun laws are important because with more gun control people can be safe by

guns.
