Construction Method of Seismic Isolation
What is the Seismic Isolation?
The Control of Vibration is the Key Point for Seismic Isolation

Seismic isolation is a method of construction to separate the building and the

ground and install the seismic isolation device to prevent the transmission of the
vibration of earthquake to maintain the safety of the building. The damping and
transformation of the earthquake force to the slow vibration will protect not only
the building itself, but the inside of the building as well.
The Natural Period of Seismic Isolation Building
The seismic isolation construction will elongate the natural period of the building
to avoid the resonance with the seismic movement, and further decreases the seismic
vibration to 1/3 – 1/5.

On the other hand, anti-seismic is a construction method to increase the rigidity of

the building to resist the seismic force.

The building itself will be protected, but the secondary disaster, such as the
falling of furniture or the damage to the interior finishing material of the
building, may occur.

Natural Period of Anti-Seismic Building

The building built using the construction method of anti-seismic will have the
resonance when the period of earthquake vibration matches the natural period of the
building to cause the 3 – 5 times amplified vibration of the building.
The Image of Comparison of Vibration of Seismic Isolation and
Anti-Seismic
The seismic isolation construction will elongate the natural period of the building
to avoid the resonance with the seismic movement, and further decreases the seismic
vibration to 1/3 – 1/5.
On the other hand, anti-seismic is a construction method to increase the rigidity of
the building to resist the seismic force.

Table of Comparison of Severity of Vibration from Seismic

Movement
The building built with Anti-Seismic Construction Method amplifies the vibration
force to 3 – 5 times.

On the other hand, Seismic Isolation decreases the severity of vibration to 1/3 –
1/5 as compared with seismic movement.

The Various Merits Generated by Seismic

Isolation
Increased Safety:
There will be no damage on interior equipment as well as building itself, no
leakage of water or gas. Prevents the secondary disaster, such as falling of
furniture, to protect human life
Maintained Functionality:
Even after a severe earthquake, normal living will be maintained because the
functionality of the building will not be disrupted.

Security of Property:
Repair, reinforcement, demolishing, re-building would be very difficult as it
was already experienced through the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake.
There is no worrying on Seismic Isolation.
Increased Flexibility:
The seismic input to the building will be greatly decreased to provide the
increased flexibility of plan.
Precast construction method will offer the simplified total structure and the
reduced weight of the member including the joints.
Increased Feeling of Security:
The reduced feeling of insecurity to earthquake will greatly reduce the
psychological load.
The evacuation route is secured after an earthquake.
The Cost Merit of Seismic Isolation:
Seismic Isolation will reduce the life cycle cost if the increased safety to
the damage from the earthquake or the eliminated cost for repair after an
earthquake, are considered.
