 To evaluate the reading skills of the students through the development of questions.
1.- Read the following story and answer the questions.
CAN LOVE HEAL A FAMILY?
This story is simple. A man and a woman, a couple, await their first child. They spent days and nights thinking abouth
their healthy baby and the life that they want for their son.However, nothing is perfect. As someone once said. The
man makes plans, but God laughs at them.
Their doctor informed that their baby will be born with a malformation that can affect his cognitive and intellectual
abilities (hydrocephalus). The doctors advised the parents to interrupt the pregnancy, but they refused. So, the baby
was born, but terribly ill. To survive, the doctors needed to perform a dangerous surgery that could kill the baby or
let him with terrible consequences. The operation was a success but the baby developed autism.
The couple’s son seemed unable to establish any contact with anything in the world. The basic human
communication, like a look that returns another look or a smile that responds to a word, did not work with their
child. His father lived dark days thinking about his ill son. The father even thought that he had to let his baby die.
The times were getting darker and darker, the father’s job took him to Hiroshima, some years have passed since the
tragedy of August 6, 1945. The man saw how death and illness coexisted in the city. In that horrible reality he saw
hope. He was surprised that doctors never stopped treating patients, even knowing that most of their patients were
contaminated with radiation and their death was closer than the end of the world. So, the man regretted the idea of
not wanting his son alive. At home again, he and his wife realized that their son, regardless his condition, was a
precious flower.
One day, while they were watching television, the child reacted to a particular sound: the trill of a bird. His parents
were astounded. Something tremendous has occurred. His parents were thrilled because their son was finally living
after years of existing.
They purchased an album that had the songs of birds, accompanied by the voice of a woman who spoke the name of
each bird. The parents played the record for their child.
Sometime later, walking in the country, they heard again the song of a bird. The child identified it and repeated the
name of the species. Again, his parents could not believe it. The child who has never spoken, has found a point of
encounter with his own external reality.
His parents decide to channel him toward music. At 11 years old, he received piano lessons at home, and although
his condition, discipline and enthusiasm keep him afloat. The effort paid off, one day the child started composing his
own music.
The child who never spoke, who later learned to identify the songs of birds, was now able to express himself through
musical notation. His point of contact with the outside world was consolidated.
Eventually, the child became an adult and a composer. His name is Hikari, and he is the son of Kenzaburo Oé and
Yukari Ikeuchi. His father, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1994, only navigated all of his pain and
frustration thanks to literature. A Personal Matter (1964) was the first of three novels in which he addressed the
circumstances of his life.
