These Science and Literacy sets are designed to give students the information they need to explore and master the following standards.
Science and Literacy is a great way to incorporate nonfiction reading strategies into the inform section of your science
lessons.
Each informational text is written for a student to gather new information and process it using vocabulary and context
clues, graphic organizers, and summary writing on or around their level of reading skill.
A gradual release of responsibility plays a crucial role in student success with reading and processing informational
texts. I suggest reading the first passages with your students and model using context clues to define scientific terms.
Show them how to use what they have read to fill in the graphic organizer. Show them how to use what they have
read to write a summary to show what they read and understood.
As the weeks go on, start letting them participate in your modeling. Gradually move them into completing these
passages and processing activities on their own.
Use the Science and Literacy piece to accompany a lab or activity and a formative assessment. Begin each lesson with
an introduction to build on prior knowledge (schema) and spark their curiosity.
I like to follow a four part strategy for planning my lessons. A lesson planning page is on the following page, and each
of the Science and Literacy Lesson Sets will contain activities and printables for the Details parts of the lesson.
I – Introduce
spark curiosity, access prior knowledge (activity and /or KWL), introduce word wall
D – Details
informational text with processing activities, define word wall or key terms [Science and Literacy Set]
E – Experience
allow students to experience the topic through labs or activities
A – Assess
formative, summative – at the end of a unit
