Abstract. A new agricultural production system is required if the planet is to produce enough food
for its expanding population. Current farming methods use far too much water, chemicals and energy
to remain sustainable in the medium to long term. A radical new approach is needed. We propose a
network of gaseous-fertigation grow tunnel facilities to revolutionize the entire system of agricultural
production. This network of vertical and horizontal density farms will replace 10,000 years of wasteful
agricultural practices with modular technology, robotics, mechatronics and AI. Agrifacture is the
integration of “Agriculture and Manufacturing” that delivers the lowest cost per square foot while
providing the highest footprint yield. It is designed to increase food safety by removing human contact
and chemical contamination. The entire system of food production is interconnected but
independently controlled at nodes. It is funded through Ethereum ERC223 blockchain smart
contracts, which issue AG-Coin Tokens. By 2020, this new digital currency will enable the production
of organic, clean and raw food within a short distance from our table, with minimal damage to the
earth.

1. Introduction
Modern agriculture relies on large tracts of land, wasteful irrigation systems and chemicals. The
entire food production cycle is owned and controlled by chemical manufacturers that keep farmers
dependent on seeds, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers, while dramatically degrading the quality
of agricultural land across the world. This system will not be able to sustain world food production
beyond 30 years into the future. By 2050, food production will need to rise by 70% to support the
200,000 new people added per day to the world food demand.i The world population is forecasted
to increase to 9.1 billion by the year 2050.ii The current food production system is increasingly fragile,
with daunting challenges faced by climate change mitigation and adaptation, water scarcity, the
decline of petroleum-based energy, biodiversity loss and persistent food insecurity. The degradation
caused by deforestation and inappropriate agricultural practices, has already resulted in losses of 2
billion hectares of the world’s agricultural landiii and continues to account for net losses in cropland
productivity at an average rate of 0.2% per year. It is estimated that 20,000 to 50,000 square
kilometers of land are lost annually through land degradation.iv Consumers suffer from poor food
quality, chemical exposure and the high costs associated with food transportation, storage and retail
costs. These problems and uncertainties can be completely transformed by the creation of a parallel
agricultural production system.

We propose the creation of a food production solution that is combined with a digital crypto-token.
We believe that digitalization is critical to being able to challenge the traditional agricultural system,
which relies on government subsidies, traditional banking, futures markets, hedging and risk
management against impacts. Under the current system, the high cost of production, transportation
and harvest losses are transferred to consumers, while food security issues are created in poor
countries. Agricultural products are shipped across the globe as commodities on containers that are
run by petroleum-based energy sources. This is the most inefficient, resource-wasting system
imaginable.
Agrifacture and the AG-Coin Token bridges this gap by bringing the farm to the community and
setting up modular tunnel-based food production facilities, close proximity to where the consumers
consume the products. The TCO model of shared ownership of independent but inter-related
subsidiary companies solves problems of market swings, supply chain interruption and distribution
interruption. It also prevents any one organization being held hostage by outside influences such as
government or transporters and will reflect positively on the token value. In this paper, we propose
a solution to the food insecurity problem by creating Agrifacture nodes to grow food collectively.

2. Agrifacture - Agriculture and Manufacturing

Agrifacture is the integration of “agriculture and manufacturing” to create an environmentally
controlled ecosystem, utilizing modular technology, robotics, mechatronics and AI. We use patent
pending and proprietary modular automation and robotics processes to produce seed-to-fork, ready
to eat (RTE) agricultural products packaged for commercial and retail sales. Agrifacture is an
advanced agricultural replacement methodology that delivers the lowest cost per square foot while
providing the highest footprint yield by maximizing horizontal compression and vertical density.

The components of Agrifacture include:

- Autonomous mechatronics and robotics

- Closed loop vertically integrated archetype facility that delivers seed to fork food production
- Patented reusable modular autonomous transfer unit (ATU) for germination and growing
- Gasiform fertigation process
- Environmentally controlled growing zones on each vertical level
- Autonomous mechanoid robotic transport, insertion and retrieval of ATUs
- Re-seeding and re-insertion of ATU’s in 30 minutes from start to finish
- Sorting, mixing and packaging of products within the same facility
- No human contact with product at any time

- Deployable in any environment, earth, space station, mars or moon

Our comparative research on traditional soil-based and vertical farming methods indicate that vertical
and horizontal density is critical. A minimum of 7:1 compression ratio is required to become a
competitive and economically viable solution for soil replacement. Current hydroponic and aeroponic
methods deliver roughly 3:1 compression ratios. Our system delivers a 1:1 vertical density with an
18+:1 horizontal compression ratio to soil based farming and a 5:1 compression ratio compared to
current hydroponic and aeroponic methods.

Preliminary benchmarks for vertical farm design demand competitive horizontal compression,
vertical density, environmental monitoring and control at every layer, automation, control and transfer
and harvesting away from the grow zones. Studying every step of the process, each process has
been analyzed for time, motion, energy compression and efficiency parameters.

The methodology is based on modular technology combined with multiple and rapid grow cycles to
maximize commodity scaling capacity. The architecture is designed to remove human contact with
the product until consumed, which makes the system scalable into all regions of the planet and
space, the next frontier. One facility archetype is able to produce over 6 million pounds of product
per year, feeding 215,000 annually— but it fits on two acres of ground, instead of 320 soil acres.

The modularization of components allows for fast assembly, mobilization and repairs. The design is
based on autonomous transfer units (ATU), which are placed 8 cubes high and 15 cubes wide in a
moveable rack. ATUs are inserted and extracted by autonomous robotic systems which also
transport to harvesting and return the rack back to seeding for the next grow cycle. The extraction of
finished product to the insertion of a new seedling has been shortened to 30 minutes.

3. AG-COIN Offering
The solution for funding this new agricultural revolution is blockchain smart contracts, which issue
AG-Coin Tokens to consumers. The token is a link between the digital crypto token and the
production output of Agrifacture tunnel farms.

The blockchain industry creates disruption to traditional agriculture financing systems, which use
banking, futures, securities and insurance markets as expensive services that add on cost to the
consumer. Blockchain technology has the potential to democratize ownership of agricultural food
production. We are not talking about “adapt” technology, but we intend to use blockchain to “replace”
ten thousand years of inefficient agricultural practices. The use of blockchain is an opportunity for
Agrifacture to move beyond speculative investments to initial coin offerings (ICOs) that link hard
assets of viable businesses to tangible and viable products consumed by the consumers. All ICOs
will be backed on collateral and real property (real estate, stock, product) of the Agrifacture tunnel
farms and not just ideas.

The AG-Coin token will be implemented as an ERC223 compatible smart contract on the Ethereum
blockchain. Ethereum was chosen for this offering due to its broad adoption and industry standard
for issuing custom smart contracts for digital assets. The compatibility with the ERC223 standard
leverages the existing advantages of the Ethereum ecosystem, namely in terms of development
tools, wallets, exchanges and human resource expertise and provides the additional security not
found in ERC20. Programming smart contracts with a Turing-complete language allows for robust
foundation and flexible customization of the token for AG-COIN specific requirements.

Agrifacture International Ltd (AIL) will create 500 million AG-COIN Tokens. AG-COIN value is based
on the production output of the Agrifacture tunnel farms and is redeemable for future production.
AIL will release to consumers 400 million AG-Coin Tokens for purchase.

4. Proof-of-Work
To implement a distributed and scalable network of Agrifacture farms, we will need to use a proof-
of-work system that shows the complete manufacturing and growing cycle. The proof-of-work will
consist of the construction of two complete five-tunnel production facilities and the completion of a
research and development facility.

This design and build project will establish a new business architype in agricultural production,
processing, packaging and delivery to the customer. It is based on a single source grower and
processor facilities for fresh cut produce, raw agricultural commodities and ready to eat leafy greens.
The proof of work facility will cultivate leafy greens: romaine, leaf, butter, baby leaf or leafy greens,
escarole, endive, spring mix, spinach, cabbage, arugula and chard. In the future, we will turn to
wheat and rice at commodity volumes.

The proof-of-work also completes the structuring of the enterprise and shareholding to maximise the
economic, environmental and social return to token-holders. The system provides lower risk by
maintaining maximum risk management controls over costs and quality of products. It also provides
a higher return on investment by improving the total cost of ownership (TCO) for consumers and
shareholders. Employing TCO methodology through ownership in interdependent but subsidiary
companies, allows each company to stay independent to generate revenues but reduces the high
cost of managing extensive third party and transactional contracts.

The proof of work is the result of ten years of research, development, testing and prototyping and
several million dollars of investment. It provides increased food safety, environmental benefits,
sustainability of food systems, and economic viability. The Agrifacture system is more economically
viable than traditional farming, by cutting out all of middlemen between farm and consumer. Our
financial models are based on existing proof of concept technology that is able to offer the following
cost savings:

- Lower cost of production per crop acre than traditional agricultural methods
- Increased production volume per square foot
- Increased density per square foot
- Lower growing and harvesting costs per acre
- Removal of supply disruptions due to economic or environmental issues
- Removal of native range extension constraints
- Reduction of transportation premium by $1.25 USD per pound relative to market price
- Improved time value with 8 hours from harvest to consumer
- Peer-to-peer payment systems remove transaction fees
5. Food Safety and Environmental Benefits
Agrifacture addresses both the issue of production capability and product fitness for consumption.
The closed-loop environmentally controlled ecosystem resists virus, bacterium, microorganisms,
airborne, and human borne contamination. It shields products from Mother Nature eliminating natural
and man-made environmental contamination. System automation and robotics eliminate direct
human contact therefore removing internal human contamination and the potential for pathogenic
induced illnesses. Pure food does not require chemical sanitation, or preservation. The food
produced can be termed “Safe Raw Pure Products” free of additives, and chemicals, raw and pure
as nature intended. Products untouched by nature or man, grown, harvested and packaged fresh
locally. Unadulterated fresh products, harvested fresh daily only miles from your store. Controlled
screening of initial “seed” stock and apomixes, or asexual reproduction eliminates outside source
contamination of production supplies. Safety Chain of Custody is maintained throughout the entire
cycle of growing, harvesting, packaging and shipping to consumer, exceeding all global mandates
for food safety.

Our processus have numerous environmental benefits. Agrifacture saves water by using only 4.67%
of water of traditional soil-based crop production and we recovering 94% of that 4.67% for reuse in
the next grow cycle providing a 99.72% efficiency in water conservation. Soil destruction is prevented
as we produce 16 crops per year, without soil. At traditional farms, the soil is tilled twice and
chemically treated up to 15 times per crop which is grown four times a year. Additionally, chemical
pollution is prevented because Agrifacture does not use chemicals. Soil based farming, on the other
hand, uses an unconstrained aerosol or irrigation of insecticide, pesticide, fungicide, and soil
treatments. Our processes reduce CO2 emissions. As a carbon sequestration producer, we are able
to be a seller/provider of cap and trade permits. We don't consume petroleum products in our
production. Agrifacture systems reduce the risk of crop loss significantly, ascertains a low carbon
foot-print, and require only fractional rare earth resources.

Agrifacture systems reduce the risk of crop loss significantly. In areas of low leafy greens
consumption, the positioning of our geographically unrestrained facilities can increase supply of
recommended dietary levels. Our sustainable system offers perpetual regeneration of food, 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Our multiple and rapid grow cycles allow us to grow anywhere
in the world in a controlled, clean, safe environment. Using a fraction of the water, a fraction of the
fertilizer, and none of the harmful chemicals used in outdoor agriculture allowing for the delivery of
fresh, safe crops to consumers’ tables in a fraction of the time and at a fraction of the cost. With
close proximity to retail consumers, Agrifacture lowers unit operating costs and create “market
stability” with sustainable year-round supply of products.
