MAY/JUNE 2011

SUBJECT: INSTRUMENTATION & CONTROL

REVISED CREDIT SYSTEM

Time: 3 Hours. MAX.MARKS: 50

Instructions to Candidates:
 Answer ANY FIVE FULL questions.
 Missing data, if any, may be suitably assumed.

1A) Define the following: a.) Dead Band b.) Hysteresis (02)

1B) Define the term Transducers. Differentiate between Active and Passive
Transducers. (02)
1C) The following resistance values of a platinum resistance thermometer
were measured at a range of temperature. Determine the measurement
sensitivity of the instrument in Ω/ °C
Resistance(Ω) 307 314 321 328 (02)
Temperature(°C) 200 230 260 290

1D) Explain the functions of following element with respect to Bourdon tube
pressure gauge with digital read-out.
a.) Detector Transducer element
b.) Secondary Transducer element (04)
c.) Variable Manipulation element
Show the generalized measurement system for the above system with
Block diagram.
2A) A pressure of 256kPa acting on a flat diaphragm produces a
displacement of 0.2mm at its centre. What pressure would produce same (03)
displacement if the diameter of the diaphragm is made twice and
Its thickness made half & material used is same.
2B) Differentiate between Systematic and Random errors with suitable
examples. (03)

2C) Explain the theory of working of gas filled thermometer with neat sketch.
What is the range for which this thermometer is used? (04)

3A) State and explain the laws of Thermocouple. Explain the application of (04)
these laws.
3B) A chromel-Alumel thermocouple with reference junction temperature of
24 °C is used to measure an unknown temperature (temperature of (03)
source). The Potentiometer reading is 25.76 mv, find the unknown
temperature. The calibration chart of thermocouple w.r.to reference
junction temperature of 0°C is
Temp °C 20 24 28 ---- 480 488 493
Voltage mv 0.8 0.95 1.12 ---- 26.25 26.72 26.94

3C) Explain with neat sketch the working of Radiation pyrometer. 03)

4A) Derive an expression for gauge factor of a strain gauge and show that in (04)
the elastic region, the gauge factor is 2.

4B) Explain the shunting method used to calibrate the strain gauge? Derive
the expression for equivalent strain during calibration.

A strain gauge of resistance 120 Ώ and gauge factor 2.1. It is Shunted

by a resistance of 100 K Ώ. What equivalent strain will be indicated
when gauge is shunted. (03)

4C) A metallic strain gauge has a resistance of 120 Ώ and gauge factor of 2.
It is installed on an aluminum structure which has yield point stress of 0.2
GN/m2 & Young’s modulus of 68.7GN/m2 . Determine the change
In resistance of strain gauge that would be caused by loading the
material to the yield point. (03)

5A) Explain with neat sketch the working of Hydraulic load cell. (04)

5B) What do you mean by temperature compensation of strain gauge.

Explain the method of Temperature compensation using Dummy gauge. (03)

5C) Write A note on Thermisters. (03)
