A series mercury transformer is used to operate a
mercury lamp irom a constart current series street
Iightingcircuit. They insulate the lamp and luminaire
from the high voltage ol the series ciicuit and provide
proper starting voltage and operating current for the
lamp. Series mercury transformers are designed to
operate specific mercury lamps.

tape and a drip loop to prevent moisture eutry. Those
with packing gland bushings do not require taping.
Aerial tlpes are a-Iso availabl€. Some have strap
handle brackets, and some use aerial brackets.
Pole top transformers hav€ separate cast aluminum
pole top adapters to fit ove! the top of a 3.5 to 4 inch
O. D. round or fluted pole.

series mercury trarsformers. They are available
for all lamps, circuit currents, and mounting
requirements.

The voltage required to start a mercury larbp is
higher tlan its operating voltage. On a seriee circuit,
the available voltage of the constant current trans-
former is divided among the series mercury trans-
formers. Therefore, it is necessary to provide
suJficient constant current transformer capacity to
provide the required starting voltage. Since mercury
lamps lequir:e a higher starting voltage at low ambient
temperatures, additiotral constant current transformer
capacity per lamp is needed for low temperature-
starting.
The following table gives the recommended watts of
constant current transformer capacity lor each mer-
cury lamp, depeDdant upon the minimum temperature
at which dependable starting is desired'

A11 series mercury transformers aie tested according
to NEMA add other applicable speciJications for ade-
quate safety and insulation values, Al1 are tested for
use on circuits up to 10,500 volts. Numerous other
tests assure proper star:ting and operation of the lamp.
