SPRING STAMPEX REPORT 2018
The Kids Zone at Spring Stampex was busier this time on
each of the days, benefitting from the event being held in
half term. Free goody bags were on offer as well as the
Lucky Dip, Guess the number of stamps in the Jar (see
winner 12 year old Holly Wan, from Cheltenham, photo
left) and other prizes. Attendance at Autumn Stampex
2017 had been disappointing but had clearly been
affected by the terrorism in London on the Friday. But at
Spring Stampex the
numbers at the popular
free points auction
(which has become a
regular feature of
Stampex Saturday) was
the highest for some
time. As usual, the kids gained points by completing
activities, this time on the theme of “Transport” and
they could use these points to bid in the auction. All
the children taking part in the auction were entered
into a free draw for a Penny Black, sponsored by
Mulready Philatelics. The lucky winner this time was 9
year old Zac Hayhurst from Reading (see photo right)
who looks especially pleased with his valuable prize!

The Kids Zone was well supported by a range of volunteers and sincere appreciation
to all, including Peter Barham, Alan Bretherton and Ralph Stuttard who were on the
stand every day.
There was also a daily Stamp Art Workshop, organised by Suzanne Rae of
Artstamped. This again provided popular with children making cards and pictures
from stamps.

Cartor Security Printing provided a “Post & Go” machine that could
print on Stamp Active “poster stamps” with various standardised
messages or personalised messages with or without emogis.
Children could select their own free of charge, but adults could buy
a single set (of 6 stamps) at £10 to raise funds for Stamp Active.

John Davies, Chairman of the Stamp Active
Network, said “This is a tremendous
initiative by Cartor to support us. We are
entirely reliant on sponsorship and
donations to continue our activities. This
finance will go a long way
COMPETITIONS NEWS
ENTER ‘MY FAVOURITE THINGS’ COMPETITION
With the Summer Holidays approaching, there will be plenty of time to
think about entering a stamp competition. Youngsters can have a go at
entering the Stamp Active Network’s one-page stamp competition
about their Favourite Things.
They can choose anything they like as their one-page theme. Perhaps they could
choose their favourite hobby or sport, favourite famous person; or their favourite
holiday place or building, or favourite Royal Wedding. Or maybe they could choose
stamps to illustrate their favourite author, story, poem or song; or maybe their
favourite wild animal or pet, flowers, trees, sports or transport; their favourite season
of the year, Disney characters, a musical or film, or even their favourite colour; or
make up their own story ….. in fact it could be anything that they like to do or see or
places they like to go to. The possibilities are endless! They could choose to focus on
one area – like tennis or trains or Beatrix Potter – or they may wish to cover a range
such as Sports or Transport or Children’s Books.
Anyone up to the age of 12 (on 1st September 2018) can enter. Entries should be on
good quality paper (A4) or a similar size album page, and placed in a clear protector.
The entries can be either hand-written or prepared using a computer.
The page must have a title, and either captions or a short write up that tells the story
or gives information. Your full name and address (home or school) should be on the
back of the page, also your age on 1st September 2018. Entries will only be returned
if a stamped-addressed envelope is enclosed with the entry.
There will be three age groups – Up to 7; 8-9; 10-12 – with stamp prizes being
awarded for First, Second, and Third in each age group, sponsored by Isle of Man
Stamps & Coins to the value of £25 (1st), £20 (2nd) and £15 (3rd). The best overall
entry will receive a prize valued at £40.
THE DEADLINE FOR RECEIVING ENTRIES IS 1st SEPTEMBER 2018. Only one
entry per person is allowed. UK entrants only. Winners will be announced in the
philatelic press and on the Stamp Active Website. The best entries will be on display
at Stampex at the Business and Design Centre in London. Send entries to: Stamp
Active Network, 3 Longfellow Road, Banbury, OX16 9LB. See more information about
other competitions on the Stamp Active website www.stampactive.co.uk
Entry form and details are on the Stamp Active website;

THE STAMP ACTIVE COMPETITION, sponsored by the Great Britain Philatelic Society
and Stanley Gibbons Ltd, was introduced in 1998 in the national competitions to
encourage new entrants. The equivalent of an “Open” class, it allows a minimum of
four pages (rather than sixteen for the British Youth Stamp Championships) but can
then be increased to up to 24 pages. It is judged on presentation and originality (not
FIP rules). Medals are awarded in the same way as other competitions for every
entry. There is a prize of £25 voucher for the winner in each class to be used for
philatelic items, and the best overall entry receives £50.
This is a great way for young collectors to start their journey in stamp competitions.

Once again the judges in the Stamp Active Competition for Spring
2018 were impressed by the ingenuity and diversity shown through
the exhibits. However, it would be good to see more entries
particularly from areas of the UK that were once so active in promoting
collecting among the young.
The entries in the Stamp Active Competition, sponsored by the Great Britain Philatelic
Society, were judged by Dave Armitage, Brian Asquith and Richard West, at the
premises of The Royal Philatelic Society London. Thanks to The Philatelic Traders’
Society, they were exhibited at Spring Stampex International.
The results are:
The overall best entry and the best entry in Class D is Animals in Books and Films by
Jessica Corbett. The best entry in Class C is Wales by Max Fenn.
The Schools Trophy is won by Prendergast Junior School in Haverfordwest.
