ideas Behind the Ovals

The current Toyota mark was introduced in October of 1989, to commemorate the 50th year of the
company. The development of the current logo took about five years, as it was necessary to develop
a suitable logo to integrate with the rising profile of Toyota in foreign countries. There were two
motivating factors in designing the logo: recognition from a distance announcing the "arrival of
Toyota", and a logo with a strong visual impact that stands out from other automobiles.

There are three ovals in the new logo that are combined in a horizontally symmetrical configuration.
The two perpendicular ovals inside the larger oval represent the heart of the customer and the heart
of the company. They are overlapped to represent a mutually beneficial relationship and trust
between each other.

The overlapping of the two perpendicular ovals inside the outer oval symbolize "T" for Toyota, as
well as a steering wheel, representing the vehicle itself. The outer oval symbolizes the world
embracing Toyota. Each oval is contoured with different stroke thicknesses, similar to the "brush" art
known in Japanese culture.

The space in the background within the logo exhibits the "infinite values" which Toyota conveys to its
customers: superb quality, value beyond expectation, joy of driving, innovation, and integrity in
safety, the environment and social responsibility.

Power of the Brand

This newly designed Toyota logo made its debut on their luxury model, Celsior, in October of 1989.
Soon after more models were proudly displaying the new emblem. An unprecedented logo of its
time and clearly perceptible from both head on and a rear view mirror, it has quickly became widely
recognized as the symbol of "Toyota".

From "TOYODA" to "TOYOTA"

Toyota originated from the family name of the founder, "Toyoda", with early vehicles produced by
the company originally sold with a "Toyoda" emblem. In 1936, the company ran a public competition
to design a new logo, which lead to a change in the brand name to what is now called "Toyota".
It has been regarded as a favorable transition from "Toyoda" to "Toyota", because voiceless
consonants sound more appealing than voiced consonants. In addition, through the concept of
"jikaku" (counting the number of strokes in writing characters to determine good and bad luck), its
eight-stroke count is associated with wealth and good fortune. Lastly, the change also signified the
expansion of a small independent company to a larger corporate enterprise.

Toyota Motor Corporation is currently the largest car manufacturer in the world, producing over
10 million vehicles annually. The company was founded in 1937 by Kiichiro Toyoda and rocketed
during the 1970’s oil crisis. With oil prices going sky high, the huge US market required
inexpensive economical cars to replace their bulky sedans, mainly powered by V8 engines. That
was a turning point for Toyota which gained the reputation of producing cheap and reliable cars.
Responding to US import taxes, the Japanese company built the first plant in North America at
the beginning of the 1980’s. Later on they launched a new luxury brand Lexus.
Toyota is one of the leaders in innovative hybrid and electric technologies and their marquee
model Prius is now the best-selling hybrid car in the world. The total sales of Toyota bestseller,
Corolla, reached 40 million in 2013. The company produces vehicles under Hino, Ranz, Scion,
Lexus brands, has stakes in such companies as Daihatsu, Isuzu, Fuji Heavy Industries and
cooperates with BMW.
The Toyota logo is an important part of our identity – but have you ever wondered why it is made up
of three interlocking ovals, or what it means?

First introduced in October 1989 to mark Toyota’s 50th anniversary, it took around five years to
develop the three-oval logo. The emblem was designed to create a strong, stand out visual identity
for the brand and announce the arrival of Toyota in many countries outside of Japan.

The three ovals in the Toyota logo are linked in a horizontally symmetrical layout – so it is
recognisable both head-on and when seen in a rear-view mirror.

The inner ovals symbolise the heart of the customer and the heart of the company, overlapping to
represent a mutually beneficial relationship and trust between the two, as well as forming a ‘T’ shape
for Toyota. The outer oval one signifies the world embracing Toyota.

Each oval is drawn with different stroke thicknesses, pointing to Japanese calligraphy art and culture.

The space in the background within the logo is meant to exhibit the ‘infinite values’ which Toyota
stands for. These are: superb quality, value beyond expectation, the joy of driving, innovation, and
integrity in safety, the environment and social responsibility.

replaced with the ‘Toyoda’ word, spelled in Japanese, in a red circle. This sign remained active in
domestic market through 1989. However, with the company’s expansion to foreign markets and
North America in particular Toyota was looking for a universal logo to consolidate the brand image.

minor changes before the launch of a universal ellipse-shaped emblem we all know today.
Introduced to celebrate the company’s 50th anniversary, the new logo was intended to bring Toyota
a solid image throughout the world. Following the Japanese cultural traditions, the new logo was
both simple and meaningful. Two overlapping ellipses symbolize the hearts of the customers and the
company united in respect, trust and partnership. They also form a ‘T’, standing for Toyota.

The emblem is completed with a bigger oval, circling the other two to reflect the world embracing
Toyota. Besides, all of the ellipses are designed with various brush strokes, paying tribute to Japanese
calligraphy craft. The space between the ovals is meant to symbolize the infinite values, cherished by
Toyota. Excellent quality, reliability, environmental concern and innovative technologies are among
them.
