A Basic Procedure to follow in getting details post Hazardous Biological Agent (HBA)

exposure i.e. HIV, Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B and other pathogens

YOUR REPORT – Health Care Worker


1. Write a detailed occurrence/statement of the event, from start of the incident until you get your self
to one of our UKZN clinics - Howard, Med school, Westville or PMBurg
 The report MUST include dates and times of the incident and reporting, Hospital, Ward, work station
and cubicle number, anything that can identify the area,
 What you were doing at the time, a detailed report
 How it happened,
 Was it a hollow bore or solid needle?
 Did the object go into an Artery, vein, muscle or subcut of the source?
 Was there any visible blood on the object?
 Was it a splash of body fluid or blood?
 Who was with you, or who witnessed the incident.
 Where you reported the incident and to Whom i.e. which hospital and what staff, - the full name,
not Sr Taylor or Dr Pillay, must be Sister Jane Taylor or Dr Yusuf Subidaar Pillay, and their contact
details including the Hospital contact details
 Where you received your ARVs
 What treatment was issued to you and by whom, the instructions on how to take the Rx
2. When was your last HIV test and if you know the result
SOURCE Details
NB you need to get the following:-
1. Full names, ID, Hospital number.
2. Address.
3. The source diagnosis, (what was the person admitted for) e.g. malaria, Congo fever, etc
4. Previous medical history e.g. TB, previous admissions
5. Is the source on ARV’s?
6. If so what and for how long have they been on ARV?
7. Have CD4 and viral loads been done,
8. If so, has the CD4 and Viral load been monitored, have they increased or decreased.
9. Can u stage the source?
10. Is he/she well.
11. Please get copies of the source results (if you can)

The following Viral studies need to be done on the Health Care worker
 Hepatitis C, HIV, Hepatitis B surface Antibody on you.

The Source needs to have the following Viral Studies.


 HIV, Hepatitis B surface Antigen, Hepatitis C

Please make sure u are wearing protective eye wear, to avoid eye splashes, you can get cheap
pairs of safety glasses from a safety shop,
 E.g. Protector wear 033 3454001, Cnr Victoria and Boshoff street, Pietermaritzburg or
IDUBE protective wear 031 304 6664, 208 Gale Street, Durban open 07h30–16h00 Mon -Fri
 The minimum cost of this eye wear is less than R20.00
you can see some of the designs on the UVEX or Sperian eye protection web sites

Remember ARV’s need to be taken exactly 8hourly or 12hourly
