01 THE POWER OF FASTING AND PRAYERS Dr Mike Okonkwo MFR

“Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” Matthew 17:21 (KJV)

When Jesus was coming down from the Mount of Transfiguration, the disciples were confronted by a young boy
that was demonised. They tried to cast out the demon but couldn’t. Jesus then said, “Oh ye of little faith, how long
will I stay with you?” Then He spoke a word and the man was loosed. The disciples asked Jesus, “How come we
were not able to cast it out?” They wondered why the devil obeyed Jesus but not them. I know this verse has been
misconstrued over the years, but look at Jesus’ answer. He said, “Because of your unbelief.” Then He went further
and in Matthew 17:21 (KJV) said, “Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” Jesus, what exactly
were you saying? How are prayer and fasting connected to unbelief?

The answer is simple: when you engage in prayer and fasting, you develop a closer relationship with God. Your
faith in Him and His ability increases. You get to a level where you have such a close relationship that you can (http://trem.org/home/wp-
take Him literally at His word and see it manifest. That is why I say that prayer and fasting do not change God; content/uploads/2012/10/drmikeokonkwo2.jpg)
rather, they change you. Prayer and fasting repositions you in your walk with God. They bring you to a place
where you have a closer relationship with Him. They build you up in Him, and when God finds expression through
you, situations and circumstances will bow down. Upcoming events
