1. Dr. Villamor moderated the activity.

2. PGI Arambulo presented the 2nd weekly Non-GS Census for March 2018.
3. A rundown of the neurosurgery cases was presented.
4. Dr. Villamor asked how to properly take a cervical X-Ray.
5. PGI Arambulo answered that an open-mouth technique should be included to visualize the
atlanto-axial joint and assess for odontiod fracture.
6. Dr. Villamor continued to ask how to properly assess for any cervical fractures if the patient is
obese or has limitations. The question was then directed to the clerks.
7. Clerk Digamon answered that a CT-Scan will help. Dr. Villamor agreed.
8. A rundown of TCVS cases was presented.
9. Dr. Villamor asked how a certain patient was worked-up for malignancy.
10. PGI Arambulo then answered that no work-up was done for the said patient.
11. Dr. Villamor continued to ask how to to determine if a bone lesion is a primary or metastatic and
later on was assigned as a learning issue.
12. A rundown of ortho cases was presented.
13. Dr. Fernandez asked what does “calcar” mean and where is it located.
14. PGI Villacastin answered that “calcar” refers to a vertically oriented bone present in the
posteromedial region of the femoral shaft inferior to the lesser trochanter.
15. Dr. Fernandez agreed and then proceed to ask about the 3 major ligaments of the hips.
16. PGI Villacastin and PGI Arambulo alternately answered: iliofemoral, ischiofemoral, and
pubofemoral ligaments.
17. Dr. Fernandez agreed and further asked what is a syndesmosis and how to identify an intact
syndesmosis through physical exam. He then directed the question to the clerks which was
eventually assigned as a learning issue.
18. Dr. Fernandez then asked the usual X-Rays requested for the ankle.
19. PGI Arambulo answered: Anteroposterior, lateral and mortise view.
20. Dr. Fernandez asked how to perform mortise view. It later was assigned as a learning issue.
21. Dr. Fernandez proceeded to bone healing. He asked how bone healing occurs and asked about
the difference between primary and secondary healing. This was later on assigned as a learning
issue.
22. A rundown of the pediatric surgery, urosurgery, and ENT cases was presented.
23. Dr. Villamor asked about the recurrence rate of liposarcoma.
24. PGI Cania answered that the prognosis differs from the different histopathologic findings.
However, recurrence rates are increased for liposarcoma occuring in the extremities and
retroperitoneum. Atypical liposarcoma, which are lesions which occur in uncommon sites,
usually have less recurrence especially if histologic grade is favorable.
25. A discussion about a mortality case was discussed.
26. Dr. Chan asked about the cause of death.
27. PGI Cania answered that primary consideration was acute respiratory failure secondary to
massive oropharyngeal mass. Other considerations were pulmonary embolism and myocardial
infarction.
28. Dr. Villamor furthered asked about pulmonary embolism, the risk of the patient developing it
and ways to prevent it.
29. PGI Cania answered that the patient has increased risk since oncologic patients are in a
hypercoagulability state and that the patient has been bed-ridden for months. Ways to prevent
pulmonary embolism include use of compression stockings, anticoagulation and passive ROMs.
30. Dr. Chan asked the clerks about the anatomy of trachea and how tracheostomy is performed.
31. Clerk Aranas explained the anatomy of the trachea and how the procedure was done.
32. There were no further questions asked. The conference was concluded.
