Subject Area: Math

Grade Level: 9-12

Time: 45 minutes-60 minutes

Lesson Objective:

Students will find the solutions of quadratic equations through the quadratic formula

Common Core State Standards:

9-12.HSA-REI.B.4 Solve quadratic equations in one variable.

9-12.HSA-REI.B.4b Solve quadratic equations by inspection (e.g., for x² = 49), taking square
roots, completing the square, the quadratic formula and factoring, as appropriate to the initial form of
the equation. Recognize when the quadratic formula gives complex solutions and write them as a ± bi
for real numbers a and b.

Overview:

This is a newer concept for students. Although they are familiar with solving quadratic equations, this
formula provides a new way of doing so. Students will be acquainted with the formula and will be able
to solve quadratic equations simply by plugging in the information. Write the formula on the board and
read it to them to get started.

Preparation:

 Have example problems ready

 Feel comfortable with the formula (practice beforehand)
 Prepare a worksheet for the students to practice

Lesson:

1. Explain that this formula provides a new way to solve for the solutions to quadratic equations,
whether they be imaginary or real, it will always work. Remind them of the standard form of the
quadratic equation so they know how to plug in the values
2. Show the students how to do it by using a few examples.

Some examples are 8n2 + 2n − 4 = 0, x2-2x-15=0, 4x2-64x=0

Adaptations/Extensions:

1. Have the students walk you through how to do some examples, then have them start on the
worksheet and help each other. Walk around to help them.
2. Ask them if they know what to do if there is a value missing in the standard equation—what
should you put (they should put 0!!)
