In your opinion, what’s the difference between the following
5 minutes words:
*passion. *obsessions. *addiction. *compulsion.
 Do you have any of them, i.e. a passion, an obsession or an
addictive behaviour?

 In pairs or groups, learners discuss.

 Whole class.
 Learners’ perception of the words may differ than the
dictionary meaning (Do not give them the meanings at this
stage)
Lexical Meaning from Cambridge Dictionary are:

1. a passion for sth: an extreme interest in or wish for doing


something, such as a hobby, activity, etc.
2. Obsession: the control of one’s thoughts by a continuous,
powerful idea or feeling, or the idea or feeling itself.
3. Addiction: the need or strong desire to do or to have
something, or a very strong liking for something.
4. Compulsion: a very strong feeling of wanting to do something
repeatedly that is difficult to control.

Task 1  Divide students into groups.
 Give each group a card from role play 1.
 Advise each student that they would imagine that they are
part of a Group Therapy and they will discuss their ‘problems’
to others who will listen and perhaps show empathy or give
advice.
 While in groups speaking, it would be useful if there is a
member of the group recording the time each member takes
to explain their problem.
