Geothermal energy is a renewable
energy that uses the heat of the subsoil
to climatize and obtain sanitary hot water
in an ecological way. Although it is one of
the least known renewable energy
sources, its effects are spectacular to
admire in nature. Surely we can all
remember images of Mount Etna in Sicily
in full eruption, we have ever tried the
relaxing effects of hot springs or admired
fumaroles and geysers, such as the
Timanfaya park in Lanzarote, for
example. What is geothermal energy?
What applications does geothermal
energy have? It is considered a clean,
renewable and highly efficient energy,
applicable both in large buildings -
hospitals, factories, offices, etc.-, in
homes and even in buildings already
built. Sweden was the first European
country to use geothermal energy, as a
consequence of the oil crisis of 1979. In
other countries such as Finland, the
United States, Japan, Germany, Holland
and France geothermal energy is well
known and implemented for decades .
The applications of geothermal energy
depend on the characteristics of each
source. The high temperature geothermal
resources (higher than 100-150ºC) are
used mainly for the production of
electricity. When the reservoir
temperature is not sufficient to produce
electrical energy, its main applications
are thermal in the industrial, services and
residential sectors. Thus, in the case of
temperatures below 100 ° C, it can be
used directly or through a geothermal
heat pump (heating and cooling). Finally,
when it comes to resources of very low
temperatures (below 25ºC), the
possibilities of use are in the climatization
and obtaining of hot water. These
temperature levels are few meters below
our feet: in Spain, 10 meters deep, we
have around 17 degrees Celsius all year
round due to the thermal inertia of the
soil.
