Preface 7
Chapter 1

Overview
This chapter includes the following topics:

• Introduction to Axon, 8
• Installation Overview, 8
• Installation Process, 8

Introduction to Axon
Axon is a knowledge repository and governance tool that stores the core data items and the business context
of your organization. Owners, Stewards, Subject Matter Experts and other responsible stakeholders
collaborate to progressively chart the business reality of data, its lineage, and usage across processes,
policies, projects, and regulation.

Installation Overview
Informatica provides a pre-validation utility to verify if your system meets the software requirements for
installation and an installer to install Axon. Use the installer to install only Axon, only the Axon Agent, or both
of them.

The Axon Agent is required by Axon to connect to Informatica Data Quality. You can install the Axon Agent on
the same machine where you install Axon, or on a different machine. You must provide the details of your
Informatica domain when you install the Axon Agent.

Installation Process
The installation of the Axon consists of multiple phases.

The installation process consists of the following phases:

Preparation

Set up the system to meet the operating system requirements to ensure that you can successfully install
and run Axon. Run the pre-validation utility to check if your system meets the requirements.

Planning

Before you run the Axon installer, you must plan your deployment.

The following table lists the choices that the Axon installer provides. Plan your deployment based on
these choices before you run the installer:

Installation Process 9
Chapter 2

Before You Run the Installer

This chapter includes the following topics:

• System Requirements, 10
• Before You Run the Installer, 12
• Installer Directory Structure, 14

System Requirements
Verify that the system where you plan to install Axon meets the minimum requirements for the installation
process. Ensure that the external ports are open.

The following table lists the system requirements for Axon:

Component Description

Disk 200 GB

Memory 16 GB

CPU Cores 4

OS RedHat Linux version 7.x

You cannot install Axon on the same server where Informatica Internal Cluster (IHS) is installed.

Important: Informatica recommends that you use a dedicated system to deploy Axon.

Port Requirements
The packages and micro services that Axon installs use unique ports. You can choose to change some of the
port numbers during installation. The installer sets up the ports for some of the third party services and
designates a range of dynamic ports to use for some application services. Verify that the port numbers are
available before you start the installation process.

The internal ports are only used by Axon internally. Axon uses external ports for external communication.

10
The following table describes the default ports used by the micro services:

Port Type Default Port Number

Workflow Service (Camunda) 8081

Doc Upload Service 4000

Change Request Service 5000

Bulk Upload Service 7000

Bulk Upload PreValidator 7010

Bulk Upload Validator 7020

Bulk Upload Commiter Port 7030

Notification Service Port 3000

Memcache 11211

Apache Server HTTP Port. This is an external port. 80

Apache Server HTTPS Port. This is an external port. Axon uses this port if you enable SSL 443
communication.

The following table describes the ports used by Enterprise Information Catalog:

Solr Index Port 8080

System Requirements 11
Before You Run the Installer
Perform the pre-installation tasks before you run the Axon installer. Contact the IT department of your
organization if any of these tasks require additional resources.

Disable SELinux and Configure Port Access

Verify that SELinux is disabled before you run the Axon installer. Configure your firewall to allow the Axon
installer and the application that it installs to access the external ports. Optionally, disable the firewall.

Run the following command to verify if SELinux is disabled on the system where you intend to run the Axon
installer:

getenforce

The command should return the following result if SELinux is disabled:

Disabled

If SELinux is not disabled, contact the IT department of your organization.

Run the Validation Utility

Informatica provides a validation utility which you can run to verify if your system meets the requirements to
run the Axon installer.

You can download the validation utility from the following URL:
https://download.informatica.com/infa/downloads/Axon/installer-prerequisite-tester.zip

Execute the following command as a root user to run the validation utility:

sh validate.sh <PATH_EXTRACTED_AXON_INSTALLER>

Optionally, execute the following command as a sudo user to run the validation utility:

sudo sh validate.sh <PATH_EXTRACTED_AXON_INSTALLER>

The validation utility checks if your system meets the following requirements:

• System requirements
• SELinux configuration
• Internal RPMs
• Application RPMs

The following image shows the validation utility:

12 Chapter 2: Before You Run the Installer

The validation utility displays messages when it runs. Follow the instructions given in the messages before
you proceed with running the Axon installer. You can also check the log directory present in the same
directory as the validate.sh file for log messages after you run the validation utility.

Axon installs PHP version 5.6. Uninstall any other version of PHP from your system before you run the
installer.

If any of the application RPMs that are installed by the Axon installer are already present in your system,
uninstall them before you run the installer.

For a list of RPMs required by the Axon installer, see the Install the Internal RPM Package Manager Files
section in the Appendix.

Obtain the Informatica Domain Details

Axon can connect to the Informatica domain to extract profile and scorecard information from Data Quality.
Axon can extract enterprise metadata information from Enterprise Information Catalog.

You must provide the following details of your Informatica domain if you choose to install the Axon Agent
when you run the Axon installer:

• Domain name
• Port number
• Model Repository Service domain host name
• Model Repository Service domain username and password
• Model Repository Service name
• Model Repository Service security domain
• Model Repository Service SSL details
• Data Integration Service username and password
• Data Integration Service name
• Data Integration Service security domain
• Data Integration Service SSL details

You must provide the following details of your Enterprise Information Catalog installation if you choose to do
an advanced installation:

• Enterprise Information Catalog server name

• Port number
• Username and password
• Namespace
• Resource name

SSL Communication
Axon can use HTTP and HTTPS for communication. To use HTTPS communication, you must configure SSL
during installation. Keep the SSL certificate and key file ready before you start the installation.

You must have the following information ready before you start the installation:

• HTTPS port information

• SSL certificate and the path to the file
• Key file and the path to the file

Before You Run the Installer 13

Obtain the License Key
Before you install Axon, verify that you have a valid license key. Contact Informatica Global Customer Support
to obtain a license key. You must provide the location of the license key file during the installation process.

Disable Database Backup Cron Job

You can prevent automatic database backup during your Axon installation.

To disable the cron job that backs up your database periodically, set the following environment variable to
false:

AXON_ENABLE_CRON_JOB=false

Create Directories
Create the following directories before you run the installer:

1. Create an installation directory. The Axon installer creates a home directory inside the installation
directory. The installer installs Axon in the home directory. The installer stores the uninstaller.sh and
other files in the installation directory. The installation directory is referred to as
<INSTALLATION_DIRECTORY> in this document.
2. Create a temporary directory. Extract the installer files to this directory. Make sure that you download the
installer zip file to a local directory or a shared network drive that is mapped on your machine. You can
then securely copy the installer file to the installer folder and extract the installer files.
3. Optionally, create a directory for the Axon installer to install the Axon Agent.

Extract the Installer Files

The installer files are compressed and distributed as a tar file. Use an extraction utility to untar the installer
files to the installation directory on your machine. When you untar the file, verify that the extraction utility
also extracts empty folders.

Installer Directory Structure

You must decompress the Axon installer file to a directory on the system before you run the installer.

The installer file decompresses the following files to the installation directory:

• Messages
• install.sh
• Server
• properties
• source

Troubleshooting
The following sections provide information that will help you troubleshoot your Axon instance if it does not
work as expected.

Unable to Connect to Axon

You should be able to access Axon by typing the Fully Qualified Domain name or the IP address of the server
and the port number in the address bar of a web browser. If you are unable to access Axon, perform the
following steps:
