Intro panel

Design is all about choices.

Everyone knows in life choices make a difference. Sometime it is a good impact, other times it is not. Design,
like life, is similar.

Design is the same way. ‘To design’ does not only mean to make something beautiful; it means to make all the
relevant decisions regarding that product.

This pop-up shop will walk you through the entire design process and teach you about sustainable design.

To make the most of your journey, we’ve made guide cards. Please take one, follow along, and answer the
questions found in each of the four stations.

At the end of your journey, fill in your information, and drop the completed card in the box. Each night we will
draw a winner at random!

This experience prototype is sponsored by MYOMY dogoods, a Dutch Fashion House “who fuses casual and
chic into sustainable leather design bags and accessories, … designed with a mission to do good.”

In collaboration with Haagse Hogeschool students, The Next Economy Research Group, and MYOMY, we are
proud to present to you this conceptual pop-up shop. Please ask questions, leave feedback, and enjoy!

Each station (1,2,3,4) will have a question with multiple choice answers. All the user must do is fill in the
correct answer on the correct line. The letters to the answers will spell out ‘DO GOOD.’

When most people think about design, they think about beautiful things. Creating lovely things and the first
place we start on our journey.

Designer bags have many elements, as seen on the post-it notes.

Often in the beginning of the design journey, there are many many options available. Determining which
options to focus on and which ones to eliminate can take some time.

[[[CARD QUESTION: Each ‘STYLES’ post-it in has a letter….which one is NOT a type of bag? Write that letter
on your guide card]]]

Sustainable fashion is something we should all be talking about. Did you know the fashion industry is the second
largest polluter in the world? One of the easiest ways to start being more eco-conscious is to buy products made of
more sustainable materials.

What is the first letter of the material that is grown WITHOUT pesticides or GMO seeds?

Cork
Felt
Organic cotton
Polyester

HEMP
- + Anti bacterial
- + Durable
- + Softer with washing & wear
- + Easily blended with cotton, linen, silk, & wool for increased durability
- X Able to be produced organically, but many companies use many chemicals to process it
- X Many companies use ‘hemp’ which is grown organically but not processed in an organic way at all
LINEN
- + Smooth & soft; softer the more it is washed
- X Wrinkles easily
- + Biodegradable
- X Only natural colors
- X Needs heavily bleached to become pure white
COTTON
- X Needs 20,000 liters to create 1kg of cotton
- X Needs genetically modified seeds or pesticides to prevent pests, especially the bollworm
- X Lead to environmental destruction of Areal Sea
- + Organic cotton

Production station

We can make the world a better place and create beautiful products.

Many things and people are involved in the production of a bag, but partnering with fair trade producers is crucial for a
sustainable manufacturing process.

Fair Trade is a global movement that puts the people and the planet first. It helps producers in developing countries to
become more independent by having a fair income while working in safe and comfortable conditions. Moreover, it ensures
high quality by providing the employees with on-the-job trainings and access to personal development.

(Space to sit on a chair, with a real sewing machine in front, and a picture of a factory where employees are enjoying a
good working environment):

This could be the picture, it has been taken from Myomy website.

(bubble text around the sitting space - Impact of Fair Trade):

Income sustainability: Earnings fulfill basic household needs and they ensure producers and workers have the money
needed to invest in their lives and their work.

Empowerment: Empowering people to make choices for the good of themselves and their community, regardless of
gender, status, position in society, or position on the globe.

Individual and community well-being: Investing in better futures results in healthier workforce and ultimately higher
quality goods.

Environmental Stewardship: Environmental practices have long-term impacts on the livelihoods of producers,
communities, and the planet. It is highly relevant to keep the planet healthy for generations to come, and that can be done
by prohibiting the most harmful chemicals and taking measures to protect natural resources.

Question:
Distribution Station

Transport is a significant contributor to global warming through emission of carbon dioxide.

Transport has a significant environmental impact because it is a major use of energy. Energy use and emissions
vary largely between modes, causing environmentalists to call for a transition from air and road to rail and
human-powered transport, and increase transport electrification and energy efficiency.

(in a visual infographic) How can companies that produce in developing countries design a sustainable
logistics network?

· First, select the right locations to allow efficient transportation

· Second, use maximum space available and/or weight allowed during your journeys
· Switch from air freight to ocean freight
· Use alternative fuels to cut CO2 emissions, for example: LNG (liquid natural gas) which emits 11% less CO2 and causes
50% less noise, reducing therefore noise pollution too. Other sustainable fuels include CNG (compressed natural gas) or
hydrogen and biogas. The use of alternative fuels is sometimes not possible usually due to a lack of fuel stations.

(Text in each toy - impact of each way of transportation + numbers)

Rail (train toy): Railway travel is generally held up as a less environmentally damaging mode of land transportation than
trucking. On average, rail freight emits just 33% of the CO2 of an equivalent journey by road.

Road (truck toy): The environmental impacts of trucking have received a great deal of attention, particularly in
comparison with the impacts of rail. Trucking poses threats to the environment from two major quantifiable sources, air
pollution and noise. In addition, the use of trucks contributes to land-use related environmental stresses and to the
environmental impacts of accidents.

Ocean freight (ship toy): It is cost-effective, ideal for heavy-goods, and it has a much lower CO2 emissions in
comparison to air freight, since ships use less fuel than airplanes.

Air freight (plane toy): Most aircraft emissions data pertain to conventional pollutants emitted during landing and take-off
cycles. These emissions contribute to both local pollution and to global climate problems. Air transportation can threaten
the environment in three important ways. Aircraft emissions at take-off and landing contribute to both conventional air
pollution and global warming. Emissions during flight contribute to global warming. Noise, pollution, congestion, and other
land-use issues pose major problems around airports.

Add this data on each model:

Question: See where the red flag is in the map and imagine you manage the transport of a bag company that produces in
Bangladesh. Think about which one of the following options would be the most sustainable way of transporting your
products to The Netherlands.

a. Air + Road LNG

b. Road
c. Air
d. Road using alternative fuels CNG and Rail
