Nelson Mandela once said that education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change

the
world. But changing the world cannot be done with just giving out information as to render people as passive
receptacles. I believe that education should not be enclosed in the four corners of the classroom but rather it is best
to engage students with the outside world in order for them to apply every lesson they learned. Once this realization
is kept in mind, we are halfway done in changing not just our own communities but also the world. Change is the only
constant aspect of this life and what we educators must do is to make this change a positive one for the benefit of all
people.

Educators and teachers are the superheroes of today. Knowledge is their superpower. Educators don’t only
save the day but they also save the young generation from ignorance and apathy. We as educators will have to
inculcate among our students that it is not enough to be confined in our own individual development but it is important
to take responsibility to sustain social change. Furthermore, it is important to encourage our students to develop in
themselves learning, aspiration, confidence, curiosity, imagination, self-respect, critical thinking and in connection
with this to take responsibility not only for their actions but also for others. It is also a principle that self-determination
with a realist assessment of one’s aptitudes and inclinations should be possessed not only by us educators but also
by the students. In line with this, there should be communication of high expectations and respect for diverse talents,
intelligence and ways of learning.

John Dewey said that education is not preparation for life but rather education is life itself. I definitely agree
with him. I believe that a life without education is a life without meaning and education is without meaning if social life
is not imbedded in it. My personal philosophy of education combines Progressivism and Reconstructionism which is
consistent with the philosophy of the Doctoral of Education I am seeking admission for. Experience has always been
the best teacher. I believe that learning through experience is best for it allows us to make the most out of
opportunities in life. Even teachers are still students for they learn from their everyday experiences. At the same time,
I believe that we should have respect for individuality and be receptive to change as John Dewey has espoused. With
this philosophy, it will give more life to my other philosophy which is Reconstructionism. I believe that a person
wouldn’t be able to spark social change unless he or she engages with other people in different settings to learn and
have an experience on what they are going through. Learning through experience and formal education would
definitely create a better society and would generate social reform so as to overcome human oppression and improve
the conditions of human life.

I know that with the help of the University of Houston which produces competent, caring, committed and
culturally responsive educators to meet the needs of the diverse society through teaching, research and public
service, will make me one of the best superheroes of today and the future. My mission of changing the world through
education will be best realized by taking up the University’s Doctoral of Education program. I want to be part of this
program because the University has the same mission as I have which is to transform students and people into
lifelong learners, engaged citizens and creative leaders of the society.

My philosophy of education combines progressivism (learning through experience, make the most of opportunities in
life, respect for individuality and receptive to change - similar to John Dewey) and reconstructionism (social change,
address social questions and create a better society, social reform to overcome oppression and improve human
conditions - which I feel is deeply needed and so important during the day and time)

Philosophical goal of the university is to produce a cadre of educators who are competent , caring, committed and
culturally responsive to urban needs of a diverse society through teaching, research and public service. Prepares
graduates who value equity and equality to meet the demands of a culturally and linguistically diverse clientele.
