Installation 1-1

1 Installation

This driver addendum is additional to the PLC-ANALYZER pro handbook and explains particu-
larities and provides important information for the use of the following driver:

∂ PILZ PSS / PNOZ - programming interface

This driver acquires PLC signals through the programming interface of the PLC.

It is important, that you read through the driver addendum first, before you use a PLC driver.
Please pay attention to the WARNINGS that advise you on possible dangers when using PLC-
ANALYZER pro.

!
Warning
Errors that may occur in the automated facility endangering humans or causing
large-scale material damage must be prevented by additional external precautions.
These precautions (e.g. independent limit monitors, mechanical interlocks) must
guarantee a safe operation even in the case of dangerous errors.

1.1 Installation of PLC driver

You can install the PLC driver when PLC-ANALYZER pro is running. Select PLC driver in the
menu Extras. In the window PLC driver click the button Add. If the desired driver is not in the
list, then you have to install a new driver by activation via the License-Key management (s. user
manual PLC-ANALYZER pro 5 - chapter 2-2 Installation).

With PLC-ANALYZER pro you can load the same or different PLC drivers more than once to
acquire data from different PLCs.

1.1.1 Installing additional hardware

If you have already connected your programming unit (or your PC) for programming under PILZ
with the automation device, then you normally must do nothing else.

Otherwise connect a free COM port (serial connection) of your programming unit (or PC) via
RS422/485 converter with the programming interface of the automation device.

1.1.2 Installing additional software

No software is required in addition to the PLC-ANALYZER pro basic module and the PLC driv-
er.
Installation 1-2

1.2 Configuration of PLC driver

After installing the driver you can change important parameters under Properties. If you have
loaded several drivers, you can set the properties for each driver individually.

Fig. 1-1 Configuration of the PLC driver

First enter a meaningful name. Then select under Port the COM port from the PC, where the
connection cable is connected.

Under PLC you decide, if data should be recorded out of the Standard part (ST) or out of the
Fail safe part (FS) of the PSS or out of a PNOZmulti.

Use Time stamp to decide whether a time stamp is to be entered in the signal file at each moni-
toring point or only when the signal changes. In the first case the signal file resulting is bigger
because time stamping is continuous even if the signal does not alter.

Scan interval lays down the interval between reading data from the PLC. For time insensitive
applications e.g. temperatures a generous probe interval can be chosen. The signal files resulting
is smaller.

Under Symbolism you can assign a symbol file to the loaded driver. This makes the use of a sym-
bolic identifier for the address definition possible (s. user manual PLC-ANALYZER pro 5 - chap-
ter 4.1 Address selection). Besides the absolute addresses, the symbolic identifier and the com-
ments will be shown and stored in a signal- or project-file.

2.1 PLC Models and CPU’s supported

All models of the PILZ PSS-Series and PNOZmulti are supported.

2.2 Recordable PLC addresses

The following table shows the addresses possible and the appropriate syntax:

Data acquisition 2-2

∗ Note
The automation devices of the PILZ PSS family allow only byte-oriented data ac-
quisition. PLC-ANALYZER pro automatically converts a given bit address to a
byte address. All bits are available for display.

2.3 Number of simultaneously recordable addresses

Up to 32 addresses can be recorded simultaneously. An address can be a bit- or word address. In

accordance with this 256 bits (32 x 8 Bit E/A/M) can be recorded simultaneously.

∗ Note
For recording data out of data blocks one additional address each data block is
required. If e.g. data out of 4 data blocks are selected, only 28 adresses max. (e.g.
data words) can be recorded.

2.4 Timing behaviour and particularities

The intervals between scan transfers from the PILZ PLC to the computer are dependent on these
facts the cycle time of the PLC and the number of recorded signals.

The following table shows typical scan times for PILZ PSS 3046 (cycle time ca. 40ms):

Scandata Scan interval

1 Byte 90 ms
32 Word 120 ms

Table 2-2 Recording time PILZ PSS 3046

∗ Note
By processing of the variable table within the PILZ PLC there is a small cylcletime
extension. Thereby malefunctions are possible if the min. cycletime in the PLC-
configuration is max. adjusted.
