Snipbeak’s family were boring and normal and dull and stupid and did nothing
but farm cabbages all day. Snipbeak wanted to be a Runemaster when she grew
up, and go off on fabulous adventures; not spend her life waddling around,
picking slugs off plants. OK, fine, cabbage-farming had its upsides. But she
didn’t think the Cabbage Goddess had Rune Lords, and that was a deal-

One Moonie officer was too stupid to understand this. He laughed at
Snipbeak—because she talks funny on account of her maimed bill—
and threatened to feed her to the wyverns. But he wasn’t laughing when
Snipbeak sneaked into his tent; he just gurgled as she slit his throat and
took his magical sword. The Red Empurur showed her where it was
hidden, because the Red Empurur likes his best friend Snipbeak and
wants her to become a Rune Lord.
