READINESS MONITORS/DRIVE CYCLES

Air Conditioning (A/C) System

NOTE: All readiness monitors are cleared when the battery is disconnected or when the
ECM/PCM is cleared with a scan tool.

 Do not turn the ignition switch off during the procedure.

 Low ambient temperatures or excessive stop-and-go traffic may increase the
drive time needed to switch the readiness monitor from incomplete to complete.
 The readiness monitor will not switch to complete until all the enable criteria are
met.
 If a fault or defect in the vehicle system caused the MIL to come on, the
readiness monitor cannot be set to complete until the fault or defect is corrected.
 Start the engine, and hold it at 3,000 RPM with no load (in Park or neutral) until
the radiator fan comes on.

Drive Cycle Procedure

1. Plug a scan tool into the vehicle's Data Link Connector (DLC).
2. Turn the ignition, KEY ON - ENGINE OFF. Watch for MIL lamp illumination during
the bulb check. MIL lamp must have illuminated, if not, repair MIL lamp.
3. Using a scan tool check for Powertrain related DTCs.
4. Verify that no emissions related DTCs are present. If an emissions DTC is
present, the OBD II monitors may not run and the CARB readiness will not
update.
5. The emissions related DTC, will need to be repaired, then cleared. By clearing
DTCs, the OBD Monitors will need to be run and completed to set the CARB
readiness status.
6. Using the scan tool check the readiness status.
7. Do all the readiness status locations read YES?
 YES - All monitors have been completed and this vehicle is ready to be I/M or
emission tested.
 NO - The following procedure needs to be followed to attempt to run/complete all
available monitors.
8. Most OBD monitors will complete more readily using a steady driving style during
the acceleration and cruising modes. Operating the throttle in a smooth method
will help ensure and assist completing the monitors.
9. The fuel tank should be between ½ and ¾ full with ¾ full being the most desirable
level.
10. Start the engine. Idle the engine in drive for two and a half minutes with the A/C
and rear defroster on.
11. Turn the A/C and rear defrost off, and accelerate to 55 mph at half throttle.
12. Hold at a steady speed of 55 mph for three minutes.
13. Decelerate (coast down) to 20 mph without braking or depressing the clutch.
14. Accelerate back to 55 to 60 mph at ¾ throttle.
15. Hold at a steady speed of 55 to 60 mph for five minutes.
16. Decelerate (coast down) to a stop without braking.

17. If readiness status does not switch to complete, turn ignition off and repeat the
procedure.
