TITLE: INSTALLATION & TESTING OF ELECTRICAL MOTORS.

5.1.1 The responsibility for carrying out this Method Statement shall be that of
the Discipline Engineer/ Foremen, unless otherwise specifically mentioned
in this procedure. The Quality Engineer/ Discipline Engineer/ Foremen
shall be responsible for inspection & testing.

5.1.2 Conflicting requirements for the installation and testing of the electrical
motors, if any, with the manufacturer’s instructions and / or Customer’s
specifications are encountered, then such requirements in addition to the
non-conflicting requirements of this procedure shall prevail.

5.2 Preparation

5.2.1 The installation of the motor on the foundation and alignment with the
driven equipment is normally carried out by a separate crew of the
mechanical equipment erection group.

5.2.2 After the preliminary alignment of the motor with the driven equipment is
carried out, the power and control cables shall be terminated as per the
wiring / termination details. The termination of cables shall be carried out
in accordance with the applicable procedure for cable laying and
termination.

5.2.3 Prior to the testing of the motor, it shall be ensured that the coupling
between the motor and the driven equipment is released.

5.2.4 The motor shall be checked to ensure freedom from physical defects and
the rotor of the motor shall be rotated manually to ensure smooth rotation.

5.3 Motor Data

5.3.1 The following details pertaining to the motor as applicable shall be

recorded in the form for LV / HV Electrical Motor Test Sheet M & E
QC~Form- 007-01/ REV. 0:

 Name of the manufacturer.

 Type.
 Rating.
 Serial number.
 Tag number.

 Rated voltage, current & frequency.

 Rated speed and winding type.
 Hazardous area classification & class of insulation.
 Classification of bearing for DE & NDE.
 Short circuit capacity.
 Space heater rating, voltage & resistance.

TITLE: INSTALLATION & TESTING OF ELECTRICAL MOTORS.

5.4 Preliminary Checks

5.4.1 The earthing conductor installed for providing earthing connection for the
motor shall be checked for the size & type and it shall confirm to the
specification. It shall be ensured that the conductor is properly connected
to the grid. The earthing resistance at the end of the conductor where it is
to be connected with the motor shall be measured and recorded. After
recording the values, the conductor shall be connected to the motor as
specified.

5.4.2 Insulation resistance of stator winding between phase and earth for one
minute and 10 minutes shall be measured. Based on this measured
value the polarization index shall be calculated. Polarization index test
need not be carried out for LV motors, unless specifically stated.

5.4.3 For the motors provided with space heaters, insulation resistance of the
heater with respect to the earth shall be measured.

5.4.4. The type of the winding temperature detector, if any provided, shall be
ascertained to ensure compliance with specification and the insulation
resistance of the temperature detector to earth shall be measured.

5.4.5 The direction of rotation of the driven equipment shall be ascertained from
the driven equipment drawing / data sheet.

5.4.6 If the motor is provided with any air temperature indicator, the type of such
indicator shall be checked for compliance with specification.

5.4.7 In cases, where the motor is provided with ancillary systems viz., lube oil,
air circulation etc., such systems shall be checked and it shall be ensured
that the system is free of damages is properly installed and conforms to
specification.

5.4.8 While checking the insulation resistance, it shall be ensured that all LV
and control circuits are tested by a Low Voltage Megger only. For HV
applications a 2.5 KV or 5 KV Megger shall be used as appropriate.

5.5 Testing

5.5.1 Prior to energisation of the motor, it shall be ensured that the switch gear
required for the control of the motor is tested and commissioned and the
test records are available, if the switch gear is newly installed.

5.5.2 No Load Run

5.5.2.1 Prior to the no load run, the ambient temperature shall be measured and
recorded. The motor shall be energised and the rotation of the motor

shall be checked. It shall be ensured that the direction of rotation of the

motor is matching the direction of rotation of the driven equipment.

5.5.2.2 If the direction of rotation of the motor with respect to the driven
equipment is correct, then the no load running of the motor shall be
carried out. In case the direction of rotation is wrong, then the terminal
connection shall be suitably re-connected to render the direction of
rotation correct.

5.5.2.3 No load running of the motor shall be carried out for a duration of 30
minutes or as agreed with the Customer and the no load current shall be
measured.

5.5.2.4 During the no load run test, the temperature of the bearings both at the
DE and NDE shall be measured. In case, if the temperature measured on
the bearings show abnormal increase with respect to ambient
temperature, then the no load run shall be interrupted and the bearings
shall be examined for possible mistakes of mis-alignment, jam or improper
lubrication.

5.5.2.5 Upon correction of such mistakes, the motor shall be further run on no
load.

5.5.3 Load Test

5.5.3.1 Load test shall normally be carried out only for HV motors unless
otherwise agreed with the Customer or the specification demands a load
test.

5.5.3.2 The motor starting current and motor full load current shall be ascertained
from the motor data / specification and the value shall be recorded. The
ambient temperature shall be measured and recorded.

5.5.3.3 Prior to the load test, it shall be ensured that the motor is aligned with the
driven equipment and the coupling is installed (function of separate crew
under mechanical function).

5.5.3.4 After ascertaining that the motor is aligned, and the driven equipment is
properly installed to take the load for which it is intended, the load test of
the motor shall commence.

5.5.3.5 The motor running current, the bearing temperatures for the DE and NDE
and winding / frame temperature shall be measured immediately after
starting the motor and thereafter the values shall be measured at intervals
of 30 minutes.

5.5.3.6 Motor shall be run for a minimum duration of 4 hours or until the bearing
temperature stabilises.

5.5.3.7 The duration of testing may either be shortened or extended in agreement

with the Customer.

5.6 Acceptance

5.6.1 The data gathered as above shall be recorded in the applicable columns
