5 Candidates troubleshoot basic software and hardware problems common in digital learning
environments.
Description
The Technology Workshop Field Experience Log artifact created for the ITEC 7460
Professional Learning and Technology Innovation course was designed to delivery a technology
enriched teacher professional learning opportunity with regards to reading fluency. The purpose
of this artifact was to design a professional develop workshop for the teacher in our school
building. My focus for this project was sharing my work with 3rd graders and their Kindergarten
Reading Buddies. Through creation of this workshop, I spent a large amount of my time
addressing basic troubleshooting needs that arose with either the students or the staff. The
students were required to record themselves through the SeeSaw online program and then
respond to their buddies’ video. I next created a workshop which demonstrated how to best
Standard Mastery
The Technology Workshop Field Experience Log artifact demonstrates standard mastery
in that I needed to be very knowledgeable in the SeeSaw online program, how to best record the
videos to assist students, troubleshoot any issues that arose in creating these videos as well as
any issues the staff may have had in trying to access my digital tools during the workshop. This
artifact also demonstrates my mastery of troubleshooting any hardware issues that arose such as
iPad connectivity problems, project display problems, and sound discrepancies while viewing
pre-recorded videos. The ability to immediately address these software and hardware issues
made the workshop flow smoother to allow for more focus on the learning task.
Learning Gained
In creating this artifact, I learned valuable knowledge in regards to basic troubleshooting
issues for both the hardware and software digital tools we were using. Even through extensive
planning, it is not guaranteed that these issues will not arise. Being able to quickly address them
allows for less instructional time lost. Issues with software and hardware throughout the creation
of this artifact taught me to be a very flexible person in that sometimes even the most throughout
plans can run into snags ranging from connectivity issues to online software issues. Quickly
adjusting my plan to address these issues allowed for this project to be successful for the staff
In reflecting on this artifact there is a particular area I would improve for next time.
When creating the student videos many of my students required my assistance to troubleshoot
any of the issues they were having. This resulted in the recording process taking much longer
than I anticipated. To solve this problem I would select one or two students to become my
“technology leaders” and teach them basic troubleshooting I know they can assist with. By
doing this it provides an extra set of hands to help out where needed and ultimately reduce the
In demonstrating to the staff the ease of basic troubleshooting skills I was able to
emphasize how effective technology should be utilized in classrooms. Facilitating this workshop
and discussing with the staff about when we are able to troubleshoot basic technology issues
instructional time is preserved. Teachers can be hesitant to incorporate effective technology use
in their classrooms due to the need to troubleshoot issues that arise and losing instructional time
in the process. In demonstrating the ease of troubleshooting for basic issues, the staff gained a
better perspective on classroom technology use. Having this impact on the staff will also impact
student learning since our staff will now be more likely to encompass inquiry-based learning
opportunities within their own classrooms. In my experience it seems that “not knowing” how to
resolve issues can lead to misuse. Instilling comfort in that there is a way to solve it, eliminates
that issue and increases the effective use of technology within our school.
