Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951)

 Arnold was born in Austria in September 13, 1874


 He taught himself Music Theory and took his lesson in Counter Point by the Influence of
Richard Wagner
 One of his Symphonic Poem is “Pelleas et Melisande” which is a Counter Point of the
Debussy’s Opera
 By the help of Wagner his preference gradually turned to the dissonant and atonal as he
explored the use of Chromatic Harmonies
 Schoenberg Music is extremely complex and a heavy demand to listeners
 Arnold Schoenberg was credited with the establishment of the Twelve Tone System these
are:
“Verklarte Natch Three Pieces for Piano”
“Piernot Lunaire”
Verklarte Natch which means Transfigured Night in 1899”
 Schoenberg Musical compilation reached 213 works which includes Concerti, Orchestral
Music, Piano Music and other instrumental music
 Arnold Schoenberg died on July 13, 1951 in Los Angeles California because of Heart Attack

Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971)

 Igor Stravinsky is a fellow composer of Arnold Schoenberg, a painter and a Literary Figure of
“James Joyce” who is one of the trendsetters in the 20th century
 Igor was born in Russia in June 17, 1882
 Stravinsky was influenced by his teacher Nikolai Rimsky-Kosakov by making music
 The first masterpiece of Arnold was the “The Fire Bird Suite” that is composed for
Diaghilev’s Russian Ballets
 One of his outstanding work was the “Right of Spring” that reached a new level of
Dissonance
 Stravinsky rose to fame in the early 1990s for his composition for the Ballets Ruses including
the “Right of Spring”
 Stravinsky left his country for U.S. but suddenly he turned back to Russia in 1939 with Neo-
classical Style
 Igor Stravinsky Music was known as Structured, Precise, Controlled and Full of Artifice
 Stravinsky Musical Output reached 127 works including Concerti, Orchestral Music, Opera
and many others
 Igor Stravinsky died in New York City on April 6 1971 because of Congestive Heart Failure
