Catholic Quotes
Christ has illumined you with wisdom and the fires of His presence ... let it blaze!
Caryll Houselander
What is Lectio Divina, and how is it associated with St.
Benedict, who we honor on July 11?
Benedict desired his monks to live in community, praying the
Liturgy of the Hours together, contemplating sacred texts, and
doing manual labor. The monks developed a technique to
facilitate a spiritual and devotional reading of the Bible known
as Lectio Divina, the holy reading of a text. This method
encourages the reader to hear the biblical text with an open heart
and focus on whatever God wants to highlight and then apply it
to daily life.
There are variations on Lectio Divina, but essentially the
technique consists of a threestep process of reflection. Once a
text is selected, it is read meditatively, and the following are then
explored: A word or phrase that attracts you; how and where the
content of this reading touches your life today; and what you
believe that God wants you to do during this coming week
(month, year, lifetime).
Thanks to Benedict, the Christian community has been gifted
with this special way of entering into the biblical text.
St. Kateri Tekakwitha
On July 14th, we celebrate the feast of the "Lily of the
Mohawks." St. Kateri Tekakwitha is the first Native American
woman to be canonized. Orphaned by a smallpox outbreak,
Kateri survived with severe scarring and impaired eyesight.
Despite tragedy, she was a devout girl at a young age, often
building crosses from sticks in the woods. When she was 18, she
began secret instruction in the Catholic faith with French
missionaries. Her commitment to Christianity and vow of
virginity was misunderstood and ridiculed by her fellow
villagers. She escaped to a nearby mission, where she attended
daily Mass, taught the children, and cared for the sick and the
elderly. Sometimes the greatest misunderstandings can come
from those closest to us. Like St. Kateri, God invites us to be
faithful to our commitments of faith and to always respond in
love.
