Mind Wanderer: The effects of doodling on Recall ability among CAS students of
University of the East-Manila

Introduction:
Memory is the ability or power to recall events from the past and uses information
that is no longer present. It is previously encoded and stored in the brain (Mastin, 2010).
Recall or retrieval of memory is the act of remembering events or experiences from the
past. When you remember something you are actually recalling the memory. Sometimes it
is easy to recall or retrieve information when you are doing something. Doodling is a way
of passing the time when bored by a lecture. Doodling while working can be beneficial
because it aids concentration (Andrade, 2009). In contary, it is not known whether doodling
impairs performance by detracting resources from the primary task, as would be the case
for the most concurrent cognitive tasks or whether it improves performance by aiding
concentration (Do & Schallert, 2004). In addition, some research has documented a
positive effect of doodling that leads to individual’s ability to recall information. For that
reason, the researchers mainly focused on the effects of doodling on recall ability. The
study will have (4) four conditions: control, structured, unstructured, and note-taking
condition. Each condition requires 30 participants, with a total of 120 CAS students.

Methodology

Objectives:
To determine the recall ability among students during class hours.
Procedures:
A mock conversation between two friends will be recorded at relaxing conversational pase.
There are 4 condition in the study, the control, structured, unstructured and note-taking condition.
The first group-control condition, has to listen to the audio recording without doing anything.
Those in the second group-structured doodling are required to have a pencils or pen to shade a 42
shapes while listening to the audio. The unstructured doodling condition are provided with a white
blank bond paper 8/11 inch and instruct to doodle anything they want while listening to the audio.
The last group or the note-taking condition are also provided with blank paper and ask to take
notes while listening to the recordings. The study aims to identify who among the four conditions
are highly capable recalling the words from the 5 minute audio recording. They will be given a
recall quiz about the conversation in audio recordings.
Instruments:
The study will use a recorder for the audio recordings of two friends about the
earthquake. A 8/11 inch blank bond paper, printed 8/11 inch bond paper with shapes and a
1 to 13 standardize recall ability questions.
- The original journal has already provided the materials.
Participants:
The study has (4) four condition. Each condition requires a 30 participants, with a
total of 120 CAS students overall participants. Ages from 18-50 years old, both female and
male. Between Group. Four (4) Groups, 30 each participants.
Statistical Design:
The study will use ANOVA to look for the significance of the age, gender and
the group difference. We will also use Tukey HSD test for post-hoc analyses of the
significance of the four condition to each other.
