FLUID MECHANICS

WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE

ES3004
HOMEWORK #4

Due Tuesday, June 12 by midnight EST on Canvas.

Study Chapter 5.2, 2.1-2.4,2.7-2.9

Problems: (4 points each, unless otherwise noted)

1. Problem 5.25 Hint: First find the magnitude and direction of the horizontal (x) and vertical (y)
forces of the fluid on the tee (aero body), the x and y components of the force of the pipe on the
tee (answer) is of same magnitude and in opposite direction of these forces.

2. Problem 5.29 Hint: Thrust reverser force is to the right.

3. Problem 5.41 Hint: Since the jets are stationary and there is no solid object (aerodynamic body)
in the flow F fluid on aero. body = 0 in the integral momentum equation.

4. Problem 5.26 Similar hint as #1, anchoring force is force required to hold pipe in place.

5. Problem 5.40 Hint: Use both the integral momentum equation (applied to the plate) and the
Bernoulli equation (applied to the nozzle flow).

6. Problem 5.27

Hint: The elbow flow passage volume is the total volume of the elbow. Use this volume to find
the weight of the water in the control volume.

7. Problem 5.34

8. Problem 2.22. Hint: Apply the hydrostatic pressure equation several times, e.g. between points A,
B and interfaces between two fluids.

9. A home-made solid propellant rocket has an initial mass of 9.1 kg; 6.8 kg of this is fuel. The
rocket is directed vertically upward from rest, burns fuel at a constant rate of 0.23 kg/s, and ejects
exhaust gas at a speed of 1980 m/sec relative to the rocket. Assume that the pressure at the rocket
nozzle exit is atmospheric and that air resistance may be neglected.

a) Fill in the following table. You must add other important independent variables to the 1st
column; use you physical intuition and the given information above.

The dependent variable in this problem is the H = rocket height after 20 secs.

Calculate;

(b) the rocket velocity after 20 sec.

(c) the rocket height H after 20 sec.
