Please make sure the application is filled out completely and signed by the contestant and her
parent or legal guardian. Please send a non-returnable picture with your application.
There will be a MANDATORY informational meeting on Sunday, August 5, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.
at the Depot in Wellston. A parent or legal guardian MUST attend this meeting with you.
Please bring the enclosed list of eligibility rules with you to the meeting.
Please bring 1 wallet sized picture (No Glamour Shots). These pictures will not be returned.
This is for the newspaper. You should note that attendance at this meeting is absolutely
positively REQUIRED. Anyone not attending this meeting will not be permitted to participate
in the contest.

A MANDATORY rehearsal will be held Thursday, August 9, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. for all eligible
contestants at Wellston High School.

The Coal Queen’s Contest will be held Sunday August 12, 2018 at Wellston High School at 7
p.m. All contestants should be at the high school not before 6:15 and no later than 6:30. Lintala
Photography will be taking pictures at that time. Purchasing pictures is completely optional and
in no way required. An admission of $3.00 will be charged at the door for everyone except the
contestants and children under the age of 3. Refreshments will also be available to purchase.
Food and drink will not be permitted to be brought into the high school.

By signing and returning your application, you are agreeing to let your grade point average be
released to the Queen’s Chairperson for eligibility purposes.

Queen & Court
Contest and Eligibility Rules

1. Must be a female U. S. citizen and attend Wellston City Schools and must remain so during your reign.

2. Must be between the ages of 14 and 18 years old and be at least a freshman in high school on the day of
your crowning. Cannot have been previous Queen. Cannot have been court member during the 2017-
2018 reign year. Must be one-year break if trying out again. One scholarship will only be awarded at the
highest rank.

3. May not represent, hold a title for, or try-out for any other festival, community event or pageant.

4. Must have a permission form signed by a parent or guardian on file with the queen’s chairperson. The
Queen and Court will be accompanied by the Festival Queen’s chaperones, member of the Coal Festival
Board of Directors, or their designees at all appearances. Chaperones will only release you to your parent
or legal guardian. Need to be available for all parades, civic functions, and public appearances
Consideration will be given for emergencies, illness, and extenuating circumstances

5. The Queen, Court, and their parents/guardians will take full pride and responsibility in representing he
Festival and will conduct themselves accordingly.

6. Parents/guardians of the queen and court will have the shared responsibility for transporting & pulling the
float in parades.

7. The Queen and Court are expected to dress in a manner that will represent the Wellston OHillCo Society,
the Festival, and the community of Wellston with pride. No jeans or shorts will be worn for parades unless
directed by the Queen’s Chairperson

8. Always remember you are representing the Festival, OHillCo Society and the City of Wellston at all times
throughout your reign.

9. Full cooperation is expected between the queen, court, parents/guardians, and the Wellston OHillCo
Society.

10. The Queen and Court are first committed to the OHilliCo Society (Festival Board of Directors) and
the Festival. Conflicts with extra-curricular activities in which you are involved will be worked out with
the Queen’s Chairperson.

11. Must have and maintain a 2.5 grade point average throughout your reign. Grades will be check by the
Queen’s Chairman. Grade cards are to be turned in every 9 weeks.

12. Reasonable attendance at school is required.

13. Suspension from school will result in suspension from traveling with the Court for a total of two (2) events
and will count as a reprimand.

14. Boyfriends will not accompany Court members to any parade or scheduled appearance.
15. Unbecoming conduct of any kind will be investigated and brought before the Queen’s Committee. At
such time, you will be given the opportunity to defend yourself. Sufficient evidence for a criminal or
delinquency conviction is not required, for the Committee to determine that you may no longer participate.
For example, simply permitting yourself to be in an inappropriate or unbecoming situation, may be
grounds for dismissal. Each Court member will be allowed one (1) reprimand. ON the second reprimand,
you will be dismissed from the Court and required to return all items given to you by the OHilliCo Society.

16. Must be available for all parades, civic functions, and public appearances unless you are ill or excused by
the Queen’s Chairperson. One-week written notice is requested, unless it is an emergency, and must be
signed by the parent or guardian. Being late to any scheduled event will result in a reprimand, after 2
reprimands you will be dismissed from the court. If the queen is unable to participate, the first attendant
will represent the festival, if she cannot participate, the duties will go to the second attendant.

17. You are to dress and conduct yourself in a manner that will enhance the Festival and the City of Wellston.
You will be told what type of apparel is appropriate to wear to each function or event. Your cooperation
in this is expected.

18. The Queen and Court’s reign will begin at her crowning after the Saturday entertainment and will continue
through the Coal Festival the following year. All prizes will be given to each Court member at the end of
her reign. This includes Royalty Scholarships.

19. Full cooperation will be expected at all times with the Queen, Court, parents, chaperones, and the OHilliCo
Society.

20. Crowns, sashes, and other gifts will become the property of each Court member at the completion of her
reign.

21. Reasons for immediate disqualification from the Queen’s contest or dismissal from the Court:
• Marriage before or during your reign.
• Pregnancy before or during your reign.
• Use of drugs, alcohol, or tobacco during your reign.
• Any unbecoming conduct or associations which would reflect poorly on the OHilliCo Society,
Festival, or City of Wellston.

22. All decisions of the Queen’s Chairperson, Queen’s Committee, the Board of Directors, and the judges are
final.

23. Court member are excused for all activities in a one-week period, seven (7) consecutive days for scheduled
family vacations. Notification to the Queen’s Chairperson is to be at least one (1) month prior to absence.

24. Failure to comply with any of the above rules and regulations may result in immediate dismissal
