Statement of the Problem

This study aim to determine the cardioprotective property from the tannins of the young shoots of
napier grass. Specially, this study seek to answer the following questions:

1. How is the plant sample is to be collected and prepared?

2. How is the preliminary test for tannins is to be performed?
3. What method of extraction is to be used to isolate the tannins from the young shoots of napier
grass?
4. How is the physical-chemical test to be conducted?
5. What test is to be done to determine the cardioprotective property?

Significance of the Study

This study aim to highlight the importance of medicinal plant which people can get easily from their
environment and to make them aware also of the therapeutic use of plant especially for those who
cannot afford high cost medicines.

The research study is concern about the determination of the cardioprotective property of tannins from
the young shoots of napier grass, scientifically known as Pennisetum purpureum, through the
experimentation and for the realization of the therapeutic activity for the young shoots of napier
grass.

The success of this study hopes to contribute to the pharmaceutical vision towards the
development of herbal plants and animals as the knowledge of potential source of local and
effective remedies.

Scope and Delimitation

This study deals mainly on the determination of cardioprotective property from the tannins of
young shoots of napier grass. This study had undergone the following steps:

1. Collection and preparation of the plant sample.

2. Preliminary test for tannins.
3. Extraction of tannins by maceration using ethyl alcohol as a solvent.
4. Identification test of tannins, including physical, chemical and biological test.
5. Determination of the cardioprotective property of tannins the young shoots of napier
grass.
