INTRODUCTION
chiefly in the former case that the construction of the word may
require illustration, it is easy to turn to the passages cited and
observe any peculiarity of usage. It will at once be seen that, from
the way in which the list has been compiled, it is necessarily scanty
and imperfect. It is merely a handy list, intended for my own use
and for that of a few friends and students.
