Assessment of Study Habits and their Implications on Student Academic Performance:

A Case Study of Selected Engineering Students of Technological Institute of the Philippines

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Sometimes, even after studying hard for hours or spending the weekend hitting the books, some
college students at Technological Institute of the Philippines still fail to get a passing grade or at
least the one they deserve. Because of this, they tend to question their ability or capacity to learn,
without realizing that maybe there is something in their study habits that need to be fixed.

A study habit is buying out a dedicated schedule and un-interrupted time to apply one’s self to
the task of learning. Without it, one does not grow and becomes self-limiting in life. (Gonzalez,
1997) According to Azikiwe (1998), good study skills are good assets to learners; because, these
assets assist students to attain mastery in areas of specialization and consequent excellent
performance, while the opposite constitute constraints to learning and achievement leading to
failure. Sorenson (1991), while outlining the good basic study habits stated that one must study
with the primary intention of understanding. This requires one not to be in a hurry in reading
through, instead sustained concentration is necessary. Concentrating on learning requires
several useful techniques and tips for helping students to get the best understanding of their
course material in order to achieve full competence in the subject and high grades in
examination. These methods include critical thinking, metacognition, reading text skills, time
management, controlling reading difficulties, index system of study, enhancing memory efficacy,
concept mapping and thinking aloud.

For any student who wants to be successful academically, he must develop a good study habits.
Developing a good study habits cannot be achieved in one day only. Thus, effective study skills
must be practiced every single day in order to improve academic performance. Proper
investment of time in students’ life is equally important in education.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The primary aim of this study was to examine the effect of study habit on student’s academic
performance. This general aim is expressed in the following specific objectives which are to:
 Assess the study habit of engineering students in TIP;
 Compare the academic performance of students who have developed a study habit and
those who do not have study habit;
 Examine factors influencing students study habit;

RESEARCH QUESTIONS
The following questions were raised to guide the study:
 What are the study habits of engineering students in TIP?
 Do the students who have developed a study habit perform better that those who do not
have a study habit?
 What are the factors influencing students’ study habit?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The following are the significance of the study:

DEFINITION OF KEYWORDS
 Study habit:
This is a behavior style that is systematically formed by students towards learning and
achievement. Also are the ways that you study- the habit that you have form during your
schools years.
 Study skills:
These are peculiar strategies developed by the students in studying.
 Academic:
This has been variously defined but for the purpose of this study, Hornby (1991) define
academic has that which has to do with school college studies or learning in other words
designate the intellectual; aspect of education particularly the final subject deals with
organized knowledge.
