This example is similar to the one illustrated in Design of Concrete Buildings for Earthquake &
Wind Forces by Ghosh, Domel Jr., and Fanella (1995), Second Edition, published by the
Portland Cement Association.
Description
The adequacy of the shearwall section under combined factored axial loads and moments is
evaluated using an interaction diagram for bending about the strong axis which is illustrated
below.

S-CONCRETE N vs M Results
S-CONCRETE has identified load case #3 as the governing load case for axial load and
moment using a horizontal line located at the applied axial load (see above figure).

φMn 82,971
S-CONCRETE has determined the governing load case for shear is load case #3.
Vu = 581.4 kips, Mu = 57611 kft, Nu = -2711 kips with neutral axis depth ≈ 42.3"
Knowing the neutral axis depth, it is possible to determine accurately the effective depth which
is the distance from the extreme compression fiber to the centroid of the tension force.
