Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Name: Tell me how you exercise!

Content Area: Physical Education
Grade Level(s): 2nd
Content Standard Addressed: PE2.3 The physically educated student demonstrates knowledge and skills to
help achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness.

Technology Standard Addressed: 7. Global Collaborator Students use digital tools to broaden their
perspectives and enrich their learning by collaborating with others and working effectively in teams locally
and globally.

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: KidPub.com

URL(s) to support the lesson: https://www.kidpub.com/

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom: A publishing site like KidPub is useful in the classroom because students have the opportunity to
share their work with other students in the classroom, and in the city or even the country. Students will feel
as if their work is important in the world which will allow for an authentic learning experience. I will explain to
students that they can publish their work for the world to see, and how great of an opportunity publishing
will be as a means to show their family how successful they are in school. A site like this can be used across all
content areas to address any content standard.
The use of a publishing site is also a good gateway for the use of collaboration in the classroom. Students
could work in small groups to ensure they have put together the best possible project. Or, the students could
create a project independently and then have a proof-reading partner to help them make corrections and
improvements to their work. These sites also allow students to learn at higher levels of Blooms because they
are creating meaningful projects; also, they are learning on a higher LoTi level, as they become involved in a
community and post their projects online for viewing outside of the classroom.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
Students would need an iPad or laptop to create their project. First, using an application like PowerPoint or
iMovie to create a project based on the content presented to them. Then they would need access to the
internet so they are able to post their project onto the KidPub website.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: My project would allow students to work with their peers to edit and revise their project
before being able to show them to me. Students will also have the opportunity to share the project
with their family at home or a fellow teacher inside the school (if they do not have access to a
computer at home). Beyond the school, students will post their project on KidPub and other students
and teachers will access to the site are able to view their work and hopefully use it as an inspiration or
example for their own learning activity!

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): This project will require a lot of engagement in an
activity before creating the project. The students will be creating a project explaining the importance
of exercise, what happens when you exercise and their 3 favorite exercises or activities to do. I will
require that the students do the exercise and write down or report what they felt and what they did to
complete the project to ensure their data is not only original but engaging.

c. Higher-order thinking: Students will be required to use higher order thinking before the engagement
of the activity. By this I mean, I will require the students to first make predictions of what they think
will happen as they complete their exercise or their activity. I will require they give me the steps of the
activity, in order from start to finish and how they believe they will feel after completing the task. By
requiring that students make prediction before completing the task, I am challenging them to think
about cause and effect in the context of physical activity.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: The students
will post their project online and be able to share with their families the project. By sharing the project
with their families, the child could use the project to get their families up and active, moving and
completing the exercises and activities with the students at home! Also, other teachers and students in
the community and the country have access to KidPub and the content on the site, so a student’s
project could serve as an inspiration to a teacher across the country as a way to get her students to
create their own KidPub project.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): As I addressed in the collaboration portion above, I will allot time for
students to share their projects with teachers or administrators in the school to ensure that the individual
student feels that their work is going to impact another person.
First, I will send home a paper to parents with information about the project and assurance that the students
will be safe, and I will ask if the student has access to a computer at home. By asking this, I will be able to
identify which students will need to visit with another teacher or administrator to view their project!

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies: I will work with the Physical Education teacher for
my grade level to create a timeline for how we believe the project can be done. But I predict the physical part
of the project will take 2-3 days and the written/publishing part will take between 5 and 7. We will introduce
the project by allowing students to pick their 3 favorite actives and exercises and write them down in their
recording notebook. Then, we will take up the books and group the students based on interests and steps
required to complete the project. The students will work together to complete their activities or exercises and
record how they felt: physically, mentally and emotionally. The students will record the steps they did to
complete the task and share within their group to compare notes. The students will complete these steps for
all of their exercises and/or activities. I will assess student’s notes on the project to make sure they are
recording all parts I have asked for.
Then the students will begin work on the PowerPoint of their activities. I will provide a rubric with details of
how many pages, and what should be on each page! After the students have used class time to create their
PowerPoints, I will allow them to share their PowerPoints within their exercise groups to help them edit and
revise. Then, I will proof the project (with a grade), along with a parent or other teacher, and the students will
then publish their work to KidPub.
Students will be educated on not using their real name, personal photo or school address in the project. I will
be monitoring the student searches on the internet for photos and other resources. I will send home
paperwork to the parents assuring the safety of the students and have them sign a paper granting permission
for the student to publish their original work online.

Reflective Practice: I believe students will have learned how to create their own project in a fashion that
could serve as inspiration to another student or teacher. Students will feel that their work is important and
meaningful after creating this project! The lesson could be extended throughout the year as a way to monitor
progress in their physical activity. For example, could they student run faster at the year’s end compared to
the year’s beginning, could they do more push-ups? Could they jump rope longer?
