JULY 16, 2018

Insights
1. Salary of a teacher is usually very high in IIT-JEE coaching institutes, especially
when one has B.Tech. from IITs. It can touch 1 crore per annum very soon for
high-in-demand teachers.
2. However, this job is not for someone who works only for money. So if you want to be
a teacher, make sure you have some interest and inclination towards teaching.
3. The biggest challenge in this job is to handle students of different abilities and
attitudes. If you focus on one set, then the other set is left bitter.
4. This is one of the best-paid jobs in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities in India.

Where have you been born and raised?

I was born in Rajasthan and spent my early years in Madhya Pradesh. I moved to Nagpur in
1995 and lived there until my high school completion.
My parents have always been supportive of all the decisions I have made. We moved a lot
when I was a kid, but once settled in Nagpur, we’ve lived there for a long time.

What has influenced you the most?

I made most of my choices without external influence. I took up PCM (Physics, Chemistry,
Math) in my high school because that’s what most students were doing at that time.
As for my choice of profession, I started teaching English to mess workers of my college
(Birla Institute of Technology) somewhere around my third year. I realized that I enjoy
explaining stuff to people. That pushed me to become a teacher.

Can you brief a little on your career summary?

I have studied Electrical and Electronics Engineering from BITS Goa and then taught
Chemistry for classes XI and XII in IIT-HOME (A renowned foundation course coaching for
IIT-JEE and other engineering exams’ preparation) from 2011 to 2017. After which, I moved
to Indore and started my own coaching classes but had to close it soon.
Currently, I am working with Catalyser.

Which institutes are best for this kind of career?

It really depends on your college quality. IITs’ and NITs’ students are considered best
because the colleges are so prestigious.
Private colleges are usually on a downfall, but since BITs group is very old and renowned in
the field of engineering, it is considered a good college as well.

What are the costs associated with the education/training of this

profession?
No institute can teach you how to teach. It’s something you have to build up yourself
through practice and by teaching at a smaller scale.
However, the education costs of B.Tech. course from IITs and NITs is about 1 to 1.25 lakhs
INR per annum, whereas it can cost upwards of 1.7 lakhs INR per annum in private
colleges.

How does one enter in this profession?

It’s not a very difficult process. You can approach teaching institutes by yourself or apply
online. Either way, your skills are tested and if you make the cut, you can start working.
Experience and work fluency comes along the way.

What is the range of remuneration one can expect IIT-JEE

preparation industry?
In IIT-JEE preparation industry, the better your college, the better you are likely to get paid.
Starters – 3 to 5 lakhs per annum. 10 to 12 lakhs per annum for top college graduates
5 years of experience – 17 to 20 lakhs per annum and even higher
10 years of experience – 40+ lakhs per annum.
Some are earning close to 1 crore.

Please describe your work.

I assist students on various levels related to their entrance and board exam training.
A normal workday consists of 7 to 8 hours of teaching and doubt-solving.
We get regular breaks in between. No Night shifts required.

What are some of the positives, which would encourage

someone to consider a career in IIT-JEE preparation industry?
1. You get not only to teach your students about the subject, but also shape their
personality and opinions and help them with development as a whole. Your
understanding of student psychology and tackling different mental blockades of
different students grow exponentially.
2. It’s very easy and manageable job with flexible timings.
3. This job provides an environment to be creative within a set of restrictions, thus
proves to be a great profession for mental growth.
4. This job is not too difficult, provided you regularly devote some time at home, focus
on your teaching methods. If done right, you will have sufficient family-time.

What are some of the challenges that you would want someone
to be aware of when considering this job?
1. Many a time, students of different abilities are put together in the same classes. As a
teacher, I find it a rather challenging situation. Every student has his or her own
pace, and it is difficult to move ahead in a class where pace varies largely. Not only
do the quick students lag behind, but the slower students are at the risk of not
completely being able to understand or to go into a complex due to quicker ones.
2. It is challenging to deal with students who are unwilling to cooperate and this makes
the whole learning experience bitter for other students and teachers.
3. You are at times held accountable for a student’s poor performance, which is very
disruptive to your career.
4. You are required to teach complex matter within very short time constraints which
leads to insufficient understanding. It is also very demanding on your mental health.

What kind of person would be happy in this kind of career?

A person, who does not have the patience or feels suffocated in going over the same stuff
repeatedly, can’t survive this profession for a long time. Someone who has compassion has
an open mindset and genuinely enjoys explaining will thrive in this job.
What are the relevant skills that are currently commanding a
premium in your job profile?
I would say that being patient is the most important aspect of being a teacher. Some
students take up more time than others understanding their subject. You have to maintain
your pace according to your students and also complete the given syllabus by the deadline.
Managerial and communication skills hence play a very crucial role.

Given another choice, what would you do differently as far as

your professional selections are concerned?
I took up this job because I realized I enjoy doing this. I’m very content with this and I
haven’t given a thought about changing it.

What would be your advice to students or professionals who are

just starting their journey on a path similar to yours?
This job is not for someone who works only for money. So if you want to be a teacher, make
sure you have some interest and inclination towards teaching.
