Summary Homework: Study Strategies Paper

Summarize the study strategies discussed in class, and the underlying information processing
mechanisms involved in the use of these strategies. Limit your summary to half a page (single-
spaced).

There are quite a few effective strategies when it comes to studying. First, there is the strategy
of concept mapping, which is when ideas and concepts are represented visually. Concept mapping is
effective because it helps restructure information and organise relationships between different ideas.
Note-talking is another effective study strategies because as one takes down notes, the individual is
able to encode both visually and verbally. Jotting down the main ideas and supporting details helps in
memory storage and also allows for the individual to reorganise this information once class is over.
There is also the strategy of identifying important information, usually done through highlighting
and underlining. Though it is believed to be not as effective as other strategies, highlighting emphasises
the important information in a certain text. Summarising a chunk of information can also be very
effective, as this allows for the person to create a cohesive and condensed account of the main ideas of
a text. By summarizing, one can distinguish between the important ideas in a text and irrelevant
information, ultimately integrating the central ideas of a text in a meaningful way. Lastly, there is
comprehension monitoring, which is a process wherein one can periodically check his or her
understanding of the content being learned. If the student is unable to articulate a main idea of a text,
the student will can take steps to correct their mistakes and ensure that they understand what they are
reading before continuing on. This is most powerful strategy because it allows for an individual to
evaluate his or her current knowledge on the text and also facilitates one’s learning in terms of going
back to the text and repairing whatever it is they do not understand.
