Definition of Terms:

1. Alveolus - is an anatomical structure that has the form of a hollow cavity and is found in
the lung parenchyma (tissue inside the lung).

2. Dynamic Hyperinflation - is a phenomenon that occurs when a new breath begins


before the lung has reached the static equilibrium volume.

3. Elastase - a pancreatic enzyme that digests elastin.

4. Exacerbation - a sudden worsening of COPD symptoms (shortness of breath, quantity


and color of phlegm) that typically lasts for several days.

5. Matrix metalloproteinases - also known as matrixins, are calcium-dependent zinc-


containing endopeptidases; other family members are adamalysins, serralysins, and
astacins.

6. Metaplasia - abnormal change in the nature of a tissue.

7. Polycythemia - abnormally increased red cell production in the bone marrow.

8. Proteolysis - is the breakdown of proteins into smaller polypeptides or amino acids
